Once upon a time, like many Korean-born guys, I fulfilled my military duties. What sets my experience apart is my decision to apply for deployment overseas, specifically in the Greater Middle East. Back then, I didn't speak the local language. The closest I got was my B1 level French, which I picked up back in 7th grade. It wasn't exactly a simpler time - it's been many years since then - but looking back, I realize just how much I gained from that chapter of my life. During my time overseas, I didn't just learn military tactics; I also picked up a few other skills, like playing the guitar. It's funny how life throws unexpected curveballs, isn't it? Despite being an extreme extrovert - a consistent ENFP - I never imagined I'd find myself grappling with PTSD symptoms after my discharge. And during my time of service, I was a bit older than the rest, as I did my military service after my folks wanted me to serve, therefore renouncing our US residency. I was also the founding lead developer, building supply chain applications for freight forwarders. So I had to learn to let go and also learn to earn and make my journey, because nothing will be just given to you. Since then, whenever life throws me a curveball or I face tough challenges, I find myself reflecting on those days of service. It's a reminder that life isn't always smooth sailing; it's meant to be tough. And sometimes, it's not just about us - it's about something bigger. So once again, I find myself reminding me to be grateful and to hold onto faith, even in the face of adversity.

Mission Accomplished- A duty completed Why would anyone giveaway 2.5 years of their life? That too in prime years. And then for 18 years after that, 2 weeks of every year. I remember this was the thought in my head when a teenage me learnt that I would have to serve the military as national service. In Singapore, every abled Singaporean male is called on to serve. It’s compulsory. It’s a critical part of national defence and deterrence. As the oldest child in my family, I remember the day my parents sent me for basic military training about 20 years ago. It was scary, emotional and confusing that first day. Fast forward 20 years after, looking back, if I could choose whether to serve or not to serve, I will always choose TO SERVE. Ask those who have completed most or all of their national service, they tend to look at the time spent in military fatigues fondly. Strange enough, bonds formed during this period are among the deepest. Lessons learnt among the most important. Memories made among the most memorable. Life is brought down to the most fundamental, differences melt away and unity is forged through sweat, blood and tears. There is something about national service that stirs deep. I cannot put my finger on it exactly. But i know part of me will always hold it dear. I received a letter last week confirming the completion of my total national service duty as I turned 40 this year. I served as a military policeman during my National Service the last 20 years. Preparing for a war time role we all hope will never come. There is a strange content feeling about this completed duty. A sense of mission accomplished. Do you have similar thoughts on the bittersweet feeling when a duty or role ends? 📸: 1 last glance at my army fatigues for all time sake #singapore #duty #reflection
