Meta/Facebook may have a fight on its hands if it believes Australian copyright owners such as media organisations and book authors won't pursue a right to charge big tech if it scrapes their works to train AI models. High profile authors in the US already are going to court over this and ChatGPT and Meta's LLaMA large language model are in their sites. Meta's Nick Clegg claims it's fair use. He's hoping for discussions between government and industry (exactly who) to negotiate this, and wants regulation to be set internationally rather than at country-by-country level. It looks like a rerun of the 2020 battle where Facebook and Google believed they had a right to use media content in search without payment. Eventually they started to pay. This coming issue is about the ownership of personal data in an era of AI and big tech’s ability to scrape it without a fee. What do you think? (See also https://lnkd.in/dVpcZS7k)
