Google and Meta Explore New Ways To Moderate AI Responses, and Whether They Should: Both Google and Meta are exploring new guard rails for their AI tools.

With rapid advances taking place in AI, people are understandably excited by the possibilities and concerned about the risks. At Meta we believe the best way to respond to concerns is with openness. As part of our announcement of Llama 2 last week, our President of Global Affairs, Nick Clegg spoke to Australian press to outline his thinking on how industry and governments should work together to address these concerns. #AI #llama2

Meta/Facebook may have a fight on its hands if it believes Australian copyright owners such as media organisations and book authors won't pursue a right to charge big tech if it scrapes their works to train AI models. High profile authors in the US already are going to court over this and ChatGPT and Meta's LLaMA large language model are in their sites. Meta's Nick Clegg claims it's fair use. He's hoping for discussions between government and industry (exactly who) to negotiate this, and wants regulation to be set internationally rather than at country-by-country level. It looks like a rerun of the 2020 battle where Facebook and Google believed they had a right to use media content in search without payment. Eventually they started to pay.
