I'm new to actually using linkedin rather than just having a profile for the past ten years, and I don't understand how to share my "features" section! So, sharing a link to one of the features, and something I’m particularly proud of – rescuing four Hokkaido brown bears - Hanako, Kai, Riku and Amu. It took around two years of negotiation – from first seeing them in their 4mx4m concrete cages in a snowy, remote part of Japan, to hours of table discussions between multiple stakeholders, from the owners to the Japanese zoo community. We looked for solutions in Japan, but eventually settled on them going to Yorkshire Wildlife Park who were fundamental in making it all happen.
It was important to ensure the bear rescue didn’t jeopardise our carefully navigated relationships in Japan, but instead enhance them – which is why we ensured we had relevant national experts involved and signing off on all decisions made. In doing this, we maintained important relationships that has helped continue the work being done for captive wildlife in Japan. There are over 3000 registered captive wild animal facilities in Japan ranging from bear parks to exotic animal cafes. The latter cramming species such as flamingo, otters or capybara into tiny cafes to be petted. Working to change strongly embedded practices and beliefs is always a challenge, but alongside Japanese partners and international colleagues, positive change is starting to happen.
Back to the bears - It took around 20 people to help on the day of the move - moving four huge brown bears that have been in their cages for over 15 years was no small feat. We safely got them to the airport – it happened to be a heat wave which didn't help – so we set up giant fans onto their travel enclosures and fed them frozen fruit before they flew. The link is to a video and article from the BBC where we were exhausted but elated to have them arrived.
