My 4 Day Summer at BRAINEFFECT ☀️ This year, as a Leadership team, we faced a tough decision. Given the macroeconomic developments, this summer is crucial for us as a business. And that’s why, we really had to ask ourselves - can we let our 4 Day Summer happen this year again? Can we go to our investors and say - in spite of what is happening out there, we believe this is the right choice and will help us accomplish our goals? Now let me be honest. The discussion was not easy. But in the end the answer was - yes, we do. That’s why we decided, for the third time in row, to have our Fridays off in July and August (while still on full salary). Why did we do it? 😎 We believe in doing things differently. We want to contribute to the public discussion of the 4 Day work-week concept and prove it can work also in challenging times. 🙆♀️ We know we need to hit our targets. But let’s face it. Recharged, motivated employees are in a much better position to do this. 💡 This initiative helps us rethink processes, work smarter and focus even more on outcomes. And how do I spend my Fridays off? I moved to a new flat in February and I finally take the time to give it some love and make a home out of it (and specifically create a little jungle on my balcony 🌴 🌻 🌱 ) In the conventional 5-day work week, such personal pursuits often take a backseat and our 4-day summer gives me the freedom to find balance 🌊

Summertime has always been interesting to me in terms of work and creativity. I find that the breaks that come from the different cadence of our work—due to vacations (us or others), holiday weekends, kids at home (or at camp), travels, and general changes in 'vibes' among people—compound over time. It's not just my breaks but those of the people I work with and collaborate with. It's at this time that I most clearly witness the benefits of a culture of rest, refreshment, and the new perspectives that come from travel or time away from the computer for me and my team and collaborators. My question -- and I'd love your thoughts -- is that (if you see something similar or agree, or even disagree): is this effect more pronounced because of its seasonality (i.e., summer only), or is it something we can design into the rest of the year? Remember that freedom of being on summer break?! Isn't it ironic that now that we are grown-ups we theoretically are more “in charge” and yet have less freedom. Our days are full of lists, obligations. Work. Summer is the perfect time to remember that life is more than work! The longer days give us more opportunities for those things that bring joy and rest – and fun! Sure, you can do things before or after work (take an early morning run, hit a hiking trail after work, read outside, linger over the sunset). But you can give yourself some summer breaks at work too! You could... 🍧 bring a frozen treat to your morning stand-up 🚶♀️ have a walking meeting 🎡 take a field trip with your work team 🏓 play a game with your co-workers What will you do in your personal or work life to make the most of these summer days? A year ago I put out a poll to explore the impact that the summer has on a person’s sense of balance. Interestingly, while the majority of respondents (60%) said they feel more balanced in the summertime, a substantial 40% said they didn’t find that the better weather and longer days improved their sense of balance. I was surprised by this. I thought summertime would win hands down. But maybe the weather/daylight hours aren’t such an important factor of work-life balance after all. Do you agree? To those that feel a greater sense of balance during the summertime, what is it that creates that impact? Do you find it easier to focus on your work when it’s cold and dark outside?
