The Coding Company join together this week to celebrate Health Information Management week! One question I am always asked is 'Are you a nurse?' when I say I work in Healthcare. The answer is no...I'm a clinical coder. I actually translate medical diagnosis and interventions into code. For example, R11 is nausea and vomiting, Z37.0 is single live birth and U07.12 is a symptomatic coronavirus patient with positive PCR test. Every patient who is admitted to hospital, public and private, will have 'codes' applied to their patient stay. Clinical coders must have an "through working knowledge of medical science and terminology, ...make decisions about appropriate codes to assign and use the Classification..". Clinical coding is one of the pathways Health Information Managers have to choose. This pathway is made up of dedicated teams of highly intelligent professionals who work hard for health services to ensure the coding is accurate and complete. 𝐈𝐒 𝐌𝐄𝐃𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐋 𝐂𝐎𝐃𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐀𝐌𝐄 𝐀𝐒 𝐌𝐄𝐃𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐋 𝐁𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐆? Medical coding and billing are distinct but related processes. Both are integral to the business of healthcare, as both are involved in reporting diagnoses, procedures, and supplies to commercial and federal payers, such as Aetna and Medicare. Medical coders and billers both work with clinical staff and must know medical terminology, anatomy, and pathophysiology to understand physician notes and operative reports. Medical coders sometimes participate in the billing process and may code for billing companies. In small physician practices, it’s not uncommon for the same person to serve as a medical coder and medical biller. Aspiring Medical Coder and Biller | Customer Service Representative | Last year pharmacy student | Healthcare Data entry Enthusiast | Healthcare RCM | Health center Receptionist | +2 years making customers happy
As a medical coder, I have realized that our role is often misunderstood and underappreciated in the healthcare industry. Medical coding is the backbone of the billing and reimbursement process, ensuring that healthcare providers are accurately and fairly reimbursed for the services they deliver. Yet, many people outside of our profession are unaware of the critical role we play in healthcare. They may think of coding as just numbers and data entry, when in reality, it requires a deep understanding of complex medical terminology, diseases, procedures, and coding guidelines. By accurately assigning the right codes to medical diagnoses and procedures, we ensure that healthcare claims are processed efficiently and accurately. Our work directly impacts the financial health of healthcare organizations and the overall quality of patient care. However, staying up-to-date with the ever-changing coding guidelines and regulations can be challenging and demanding. It requires continuous learning and dedication to maintain the highest levels of accuracy and compliance. I am proud to be a medical coder and to play a vital role in the healthcare ecosystem. Our work may not always be visible, but it is essential in ensuring the sustainability and integrity of healthcare systems. Let's continue to educate others about the importance of medical coding and advocate for recognition and support within the industry. #medicalcoding #healthcare #reimbursement #codingprofessionals #healthcareindustry
