John Cleese's politics are pretty much the politics of 80% of us - sensible conservatism without neo-liberalism, sceptical of global alliances like Brexit, and critical of multiculturalism. These views should be the outlook of the governing party in Australia, UK, NZ and North America, - but they're not. Right and Left are both pulled away from sensible conservatism to give us a Woke Left on one side, and an Ideological Right on the other that still basically believes with Margaret Thatcher that there is "no such thing as society". It is very revealing in this interview that John Anderson confesses that he doesn't understand what Thatcher meant in saying "there is no such thing as society". This is the root failure of liberalism - its social extreme form is narcissism and "me first"; its economic extreme is Thatcherism. But John is still too uncritical of neo-liberalism to pick up what John Cleese is saying. This, in a nutshell, is the core problem of the Right. Neo-liberalism is antithetical to sensible conservatism. John Anderson is still hesitant about this and can't yet bring himself to say so. Until conservatives are able to publicly distance themselves from the deconstructionism in culture and economy that is generated by neo-liberalism AND leftism, they will continue to flounder in hopeless impotence. My article, "Weaving (Trans) Time in Mexican Cabaret’s La Prietty Guoman," has been published in Latin American Theatre Review. This piece grew from a seminar paper to presentation at Performance Studies International before revising it for my PhD preliminary exam portfolio. Then, submission and revision at LATR. This process began in Fall 2020, and here we are now! So: here's to keeping the work going, to getting help from knowledgeable people (thank you, Dr. Paola Hernández!), and to taking projects one thing at a time. The last paragraph in this article is one of my favorite things I have written.
