Northgate is proud to have presented at Battelle's Innovations in Climate Resilience Conference #ICR24 - April 22-24th, 2024 in Washington, DC. Dr. Sam Merrill of Northgate presented a technical poster on the Phased Approach to Address Sea Level Rise-Induced Mobilization of Subsurface Contaminants. The poster focused on an investigation program that Northgate developed at the Port of Oakland to assess the presence of lead in groundwater. The program will also inform sustainable adaptation measures while sea levels continue to rise and potentially mobilize subject contaminants. Based on results of the initial investigation, a follow-up investigation was developed to assess existing conditions subject to tidal influences and to allow for assessing future scenarios including sea level rise. #ClimateAction #climateresilience #climatechange #sealevelrise #groundwaterquality

Northgate is proud to have mentored within the TechWomen program for over 10 years. We encourage Bay Area technical and environmental professionals to consider offering mentorship this year through engaging and supporting emerging women leaders from Africa, Central and South Asia, and the Middle East. Mentorship applications open in June 2024. Below Northgate mentor Nancy Hendrickson coaches on the power of listening during her 2023 delegation trip to Kazakhstan. Nancy also attended the 2024 delegation trip to Cameroon. Thanks to Nancy Hendrickson for her years of thoughtful and dedicated mentorship! "Careful listening and observing can help you figure out how to make your mentee shine," coached TechWomen mentor Nancy Hendrickson, during our 2023 TechWomen delegation journey to Kazakhstan. The best TechWomen mentors are not the most experienced engineers, the most-published researchers or the savviest CEOs in their field. They're the people who listen carefully, open doors and ignite the fire within. Working with a network of other mentors, allies and partners, you can drive global impact by helping us introduce more than 100 global women innovators to your local STEM ecosystem in Chicago or San Francisco through the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs' TechWomen program. Volunteer with us for five weeks this fall for #TWChicago or #TechWomenSF as a professional mentor, cultural mentor or impact coach. Applications open in June. For the first time, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set enforceable limits on PFAS, known as forever chemicals, in drinking water. The EPA is also making unprecedented funding available to help ensure that all people have clean and safe water. An important move in public health! Legally enforceable levels and criteria can be found on the EPA site. #cleanwater #safedrinkingwateract #PFAs

"A New Microscopic Technique Zeroes in on the Poorly Explored World of Nanoplastics, Which Can Pass Into Blood, Cells and Your Brain" Just another reason to be done with plastic - worth the read! #nomoreplastic #sustainability #contamination
New study by Columbia University Department of Chemistry, Columbia Climate School Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, and Rutgers University researchers uses a technique called stimulated Raman scattering microscopy to detect nanoparticles, a previously missed category of plastics, and finds that bottled water may may contain 10 to 1,000 times more plastic pieces than previously thought. The research team plans to use the technique to study the pollution footprint of laundromats, plastics in the air, and tap water contamination, with a more urgent focus on toxicity studies to understand how nanoplastics may affect health. Northgate Environmental Management is excited to announce that two of our employees have been selected as mentors for the TechWomen 2023 Program. Congratulations Lempi Miller and Diana Chacon!
"Serving as a mentor broadened my view of the world even further, gave me more confidence in my ability to be a mentor, and opened my mind to ways in which tech can solve community issues. I think it will help me be a stronger voice for programs like this at future companies, knowing the impact and values it has on the Emerging Leaders and mentor that participate." - TechWomen Cultural Mentor Are you passionate about the unique cultural experiences that #Chicagoland has to offer? Cultural Mentors are another of the three types of TechWomen volunteer mentors. They serve as cultural ambassadors, supporting Emerging Leaders as they acclimate to life in their program city and inspiring them to make the most out of their time in the United States. Great cultural mentors: - Love showing off their city and can expose their Emerging Leaders to local and regional attractions, cultural events and service opportunities - Are knowledgeable about the logistical ins and outs of their region and can assist Emerging Leaders with questions about local transportation, dining, amenities and etc. - Can suggest and help identify indoor and outdoor cultural activities that their unique Emerging Leaders would enjoy - Can introduce their Emerging Leaders to people and spaces in the local tech scene Join the inaugural class of mentors in #ChiTown as we expand beyond Silicon Valley and welcome our global mentees to the #WindyCity this September and October. Applications are due end of day Thursday, July 20. bit.ly/TWmentor2023 #CitybytheLake #chicagowomeninSTEM #womeninSTEM
