Our program’s latest project is a rat rod build-off featuring two high schools. Students at Lakeville North High School and Minneapolis Public Schools have been working hard to build their karts from scratch throughout the school year. They’ve worked through the design, engineering, operation, and most importantly the braking of their karts. 🚀 Excited to share my journey in the recent hackathon! 🛠️ I'm thrilled to have taken part in a hackathon where I embarked on an inspiring project - the CNC Metal Piece Weight Calculator. This initiative was driven by a personal motivation and a desire to provide a practical solution to a real-world problem. 🛠️ Inspiration: The spark for this project came from the challenges faced by my boyfriend, a dedicated CNC programmer. He often grappled with accurately calculating the weight of metal pieces for different machining processes. This crucial task influenced material choices, tooling requirements, and machining parameters. 🧮 What it does: I developed an application that heavy industry engineers can use to effortlessly calculate the weight of metal workpieces. A powerful tool for decision-making in the manufacturing process! 💡 How I built it: Bringing the CNC Metal Piece Weight Calculator to life required a blend of tools and technologies. I crafted a web application using the Flask framework for the backend, while SQLite managed material data and historical calculations. The frontend, designed with Jinja templating and Bootstrap, resulted in an intuitive and user-friendly interface. 🤓 What I learned: The project was a profound learning experience. I delved into the technicalities of machining and material science, uncovering the intricacies of material densities and precise measurements. Navigating unit conversions between millimeters and inches, as well as kilograms and pounds, was a rewarding challenge. This journey amplified not only my coding skills but also honed my analytical thinking and problem-solving prowess. 🌟 What's next: The journey doesn't end here! This hackathon experience has strengthened my belief in the potential of technology to tackle real-world challenges. It's motivated me to keep exploring innovative solutions at the crossroads of engineering and software development. Edge breaking is a process that involves blunting or shaping the sharp edges of precision-machined surfaces. This process contributes to the longevity of parts, human safety during handling and the proper performance of components. Measuring the surfaces of these chamfers quickly and easily, however — that’s challenging, unless you’re measuring surfaces in three dimensions. The 4D InSpec is a vibration-immune 3D surface geometry gauge and can be used to measure chamfers, rounding and radius on manufactured parts. The instrument’s analysis software (with the edge break option) automatically finds the planes and surfaces, and measures their parameters from a one-click measurement. The tutorial below demonstrates how to properly position, measure and generate results when edge breaking chamfer holes.
