⭐️ Spotlight Saturday!⭐️ Registration coming soon! ➡️ What is “trauma,” and how do we, as professionals working with humans across the lifespan, offer our services from a place that is “trauma-informed?” How do we provide speech therapy while also recognizing the traumatic experiences that often lead someone to see SLPs in the first place? How is trauma-informed care related to diversity, equity, and inclusion? When is trauma-informed care beyond our scope of practice? And how is working with traumatized individuals related to provider burnout? This presentation will focus on what it means to be trauma-informed as SLPs. We will explore how to consider the past experiences and current emotional needs of clients, students, colleagues - and ourselves - while providing speech-language services across settings and populations. The next meeting of the Complex Behaviour Community of Practice is on June 5th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Melbourne time. Join session leader Candice Heffernan from Autism QLD as we discuss topics that will include: Supervision: In our last session, we delved into the topic of supervision. Given the depth of the discussions we were beginning to engage in, we will first continue our supervision exploration. Hearing from experienced supervisors who share tips and tricks for navigating the challenges effectively will greatly benefit our newer supervisors. Neuro-Affirming PBS: Following the supervision discussion, we'll shift our focus to neuro-affirming Positive Behavior Support (PBS), especially in the context of the Autistic community. We will share insights from recent research and open the floor for you to discuss it further. The CoP is free and open to all positive behaviour support practitioners. When Katharine Croce Ed. D. BCBA and I set out on the early development of the The Self & Match System we were fresh off the heels of writing a literature review titled “The Use of Self-Monitoring to Promote Inclusion for Children with Severe Disabilities” and our goal was to take the research of self-monitoring including an accountability component and make it a user-friendly tool for the school settings. With a foundation in evidence and mentored by two pillars in the field of self-monitoring (Dr. Saul Axelrod and Dr. Ed Shapiro), we were constantly updating the road-map considerations guide and the intricacies of the system to improve the intervention. Fast forward 2 decades and we are elated to see professionals that are continuing to add to the field of self-monitoring by specifically studying The Self & Match System. The latest research comes out of The Bedrock Clinic & Research Center, Inc. (Made2Play New Jersey) and a team of researchers shared their findings at the New York State ABA conference. Interestingly, their study, “Reducing Distress Behaviors with Non-Verbal Learners Using the Self & Match System” adds to the research supporting the implementation of self-monitoring with non-verbal preschool-aged children. Recent research in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is shaping evidence-based practices (EBPs) for individuals with autism and developmental disabilities. Key findings highlight the significance of early intervention, naturalistic teaching, and individualized treatment plans. ABA practitioners must stay updated on Functional Communication Training (FCT) nuances and embrace technology-assisted interventions. Moreover, involving parents and caregivers is proven to enhance outcomes. EBPs are crucial for ethical, accountable, and effective interventions. They lead to optimal outcomes, aid resource allocation, and drive professional development. In the world of early intervention speech-language therapy, it’s easy to get lost in the sea of data, assessments, and progress charts. While these tools are invaluable for tracking development and guiding interventions, we must never forget the heart of our work: connection. Building strong, trusting relationships with children and their families is the cornerstone of effective therapy. It’s through these connections that we gain the insights and understanding necessary to tailor our approaches to each unique individual. When a child feels seen, heard, and understood, they are more likely to engage, make progress, and thrive. Just the other day, one of my young clients, who had been struggling with articulation, proudly showed me a drawing of his favorite superhero. We spent the session incorporating his hero into our speech activities. The excitement in his eyes and his willingness to practice made all the difference. Moments like these remind me that connection truly is the key to unlocking potential. Let's prioritize connection over data, ensuring that our interventions are not only evidence-based but also infused with empathy and compassion.
