State support for higher education is too often a boom-or-bust roller-coaster cycle, according to Jennifer Delaney, a professor in Education Policy, Organization & Leadership at Illinois. "Predictability is crucial for effective planning and budgeting, and surprises can strain an institution or state system even in times of increased funding," Delaney writes. I get it. Higher education needs to reform. I've been saying that for years. But to me it's not what you teach, rather how you teach. More accurately, how the system wants you to teach. Instead consider.... How you deliver programs. How you measure competency. How you model the curriculum. How you integrate a 400 year old system into a modern, complex society. How you deliver the product at scale. How you make it affordable and desirable. How you signal achievement. How you make it agile and adaptable to the workforce. How you make it less time consuming. How you leverage technology. How you measure outcomes. You can still offer Humanities programs, but do it better. Do everything better...

HONORARY DISTINCTIONS In my humble opinion, honorary doctorates should be referred to as honorary distinctions! If you have received an honorary doctorate, it means that your professional title is NOT Dr. This means that society should not address you as Dr. Dr does not go on your resume nor does it hold any weight in academic circles or professional work environments; meaning that it does not increase your salary range or ascent in the workforce hierarchy. Honorary doctorates do not have their work published nor can you find any profiles in any exclusive, invite-only database(s) with their critically-acclaimed merits. Real doctorates are invited to global events, are invited to give keynote addresses, and online lectures to students. Real doctorates are invited to submit new papers, journals, and books. Real academic doctorate degrees cannot be taken from you, as seen below... Can we please put some respect on those who have been accepted into and who have successfully defended their dissertation, earning the rightful letters after their names and properly addressed with their rightful title as Dr... If honorary doctorates continue to refer to themselves as doctor [especially celebrities without any academic degree(s)], then I will continue to overemphasize calling real doctorate recipients "doctor" and absolutely no one else!
Howard University’s Board of Trustees has voted unanimously to revoke the honorary degree given to Sean “Diddy” Combs in 2014, saying he is “no longer worthy to hold the institution’s highest honor.” The university will also return Combs’ $1 million contribution and terminate a $1 million pledge agreement from the Sean Combs Foundation, the Board said in a statement Friday. “Mr. Combs’ behavior as captured in a recently released video is so fundamentally incompatible with Howard University’s core values and beliefs that he is deemed no longer worthy to hold the institution’s highest honor,” the Board said in the statement.

Great conversation today by two higher education leaders and a great facilitator. HFC President Kavalhuna joined University of Michigan Ann Arbor President Santa Ono and the Detroit Regional Chamber to discuss the new State of Education 2023 report. Some key takeaways from Russ' remarks: • Higher education needs to do a better job of helping people understand why and how it is critical to individual and state success • Higher education needs to focus on eliminating equity gaps and making access to education as universal as it can be • The future will be tightly tied to innovative partnerships between education, industry, and local government. https://lnkd.in/gT6JT9Mu

Exciting News for HVAC Students and Professionals! For years, the traditional educational system has maintained a rigid separation between K-12, higher #education, and the workforce. However, the U.S. Department of Education is taking a groundbreaking step to bridge this gap and ensure that high school is not just a pathway to college but also to promising careers. The U.S. Secretary of Education, Miguel Cardona, recently announced the launch of the Career Connected High School Grant program. With a $25 million budget, this initiative aims to foster #collaboration between local educational agencies, higher education institutions, and employers. The primary goal? To seamlessly integrate the last two years of high school with the initial two years of postsecondary education, ensuring improved career outcomes for all students. This initiative, part of the Raise the Bar: Unlocking Career Success campaign, is designed to help young Americans tap into the lucrative job opportunities presented by President Biden’s Bidenomics agenda. This comprehensive effort will provide students with access to high-quality career pathways, preparing them for both current in-demand jobs and future #careers. For HVAC students, this is a golden opportunity. The grant funds can be utilized for a plethora of activities tailored to regional needs. This includes additional dual enrollment classes, covering expenses such as tuition, books, and supplies for underprivileged students, and even transportation to work-based learning sites. Moreover, there's a focus on developing new career & technical education (#CTE) programs in booming sectors. This could mean more specialized courses in areas like clean energy, which is closely related to HVAC, and resources to support teacher training and the necessary equipment to kickstart these programs. For those eager to learn more about this initiative and how the U.S. Department of Education is bolstering college and career pathways, sign up for their newsletter. The future looks bright for #HVAC students and professionals. With the government's renewed focus on career success and the integration of education with the workforce, there's never been a better time to be in the HVAC industry. Let's come together, leverage these resources, and unlock unparalleled career success! As a dual enrollment program and instructor with Northern Virginia Community College for the HVAC program I will be following up with updates along ways the Fairfax County Public Schools HVAC students and advisory committee members are tapping in this resource.

Yesterday, the New York State Education Department presented a new vision for State Graduation Requirements. This November, the Department is expected to present its related state department implementation plan. Other states looking to similarly move toward modernizing graduation requirements and measures can access two reports that helped inform years of rigorous analysis and deliberation underlying NYSED's efforts. The reports, curated by the Region 2 Comprehensive Center at NYSED's request, reflect what is known about how other states approach graduation measures and requirements, including performance based assessments. They are accessible here: https://lnkd.in/erehmR-B #R2CC WestEd #GraduationRequirements #GraduationMeasures

This week I've been attending the NECHE Annual Meeting. My thinking about higher education, inside and outside of New England, has been pushed over the last few days. One of my favorite sessions is the News Flash! Session with Inside Higher Ed's founder Scott Jaschik. Hearing him provide his annual Top 10 list of issues for higher education leaders to look out has proven to be prescient over the years. For those interested, here is his list from this year: 1. Israel/Hamas War. (N.B., he shared this before yesterday's hearing in Washington) 2. Many campuses will close in the next year. 3. Demise of Affirmative Action. 4. Legacy Admissions. 5. Decline in enrollment at Community Colleges 6. Student Debt. 7. Faculty morale. 8. Budget cuts. 9. Direct admissions. 10. President Trump. A current throughout each of these topics: a lack of trust in higher education. The challenge for leaders is to go beyond engendering trust in your own institution, but in the role that higher education can play nationally. Not on this year's list, AI. It will be interesting to see how these matters will play out over the next year, and how higher ed will respond to this charge to be transparent about its value proposition for society. #NECHE2023 #highereducation #topten https://lnkd.in/gQ-qMGXv
