Interesting article. Suggests that if the next government is going to stick with LSIPs (which have a statutory footing), there's lot to think on in terms of making it work. Lots of expectation on FE Colleges but sounds like a lack of coherency across systems to promote improved outcomes: 'They [colleges] raised concerns about LSIPs existing in a vacuum of any national strategy, with colleges facing a multitude of local and regional plans, driving complexity rather than coherence.' Other identified issues include funding - including the need for revenue, not just capital - and imbalance in terms of accountability / agency. If LSIPs are here to stay, the system is going to require serious thought before they start delivering meaningful improvement.
📃 College leaders have pleaded for long-term funding to fulfil local skills improvement plan (LSIP) demands and have called on the government to spread accountability for the flagship policy to universities and other post-16 providers

Just a Midnight thought.... In today's education sector credentialism is preventing quality education and research. Many for profit education institutions are selling degrees and students are just buying degrees, whereas the learning component is missing. we as educationists must ensure that student enrolled in our programs not just take a piece of paper 📜 as degree but a learning that is employment based and industry oriented. Recommendation for students: when you enroll for a program try to get maximum out of it in terms of knowledge. Ask difficult questions to your professors. Demand for excellence.. #educateyourself #credentials #highereducation #naac #ugc

A total of 201,133 candidates who took the #2023KCSE exams achieved a mean grade of C plus and above, securing places in universities. Out of the 903,260 #candidates who sat for the exams from October 10 to November 24, 2023, those meeting the university entry grade will be absorbed by public #universities under the new #funding model, as announced by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu. The reform, which considers any other five best-performed subjects in addition to the two mandatory ones, aims to boost the number of #students eligible for higher education and #vocational training. The new measure is anticipated to have a positive impact on the qualification rates for #universities, #diploma programs, and TVET training at certificate and artisan levels. Education stakeholders expect these reforms to create more opportunities for students in diverse educational pathways beyond the traditional university route. #2024KCSE #education #hakunamatatamedia

English & Education specialist #FE Deputy Chair, Trustee & Fellow of The English Association @draperel #JoyFE💛
A fascinating useful read, incl : observations & suggestions re HE & FE forging firmer working relationships, critical re demise of Btecs, highlighting inadequacy /failure of T-levels/resits & mess of quals in non ‘superhighway’ routes. Necessary to sort for 21stC skills needs. “My sense is that demand for traditional university courses is starting to soften but even if I’m wrong about that, I’m certain that universities need to diversify their offer better to meet today’s students’ needs. Needs which are changing as rapidly as technology and the working world around us. This means diversifying programmes, and mode of delivery. It also means seeking partnerships with Further Education colleges and putting pressure on governments to facilitate that through joined up regulation and unified funding mechanisms… “So, it’s also important that we don’t get so entranced by the enormity of the 21stCentury skills challenges that we forget that it is really a fundamental human right to have an education that gives everyone access to the cannon of knowledge that helps us to be human, to live meaningfully in a democratic society and inspires us with the complex beauty of being human. “ #education #skills #futureproofing

For five decades, colleges and universities’ reputations have been defined, in large measure, by the amount of research underway and the highest degree conferred. Clearly, these are incomplete measures. They neither reflect the strength or diversity of the postsecondary sector. The 2025 Carnegie Classifications will create a more robust picture of higher education across the U.S. and make visible those institutions that demonstrably accelerate educational and career opportunities for students. https://hubs.li/Q027nWcb0 American Council on Education
