Interesting data point: since being eligible for employment at the age of 14, this is the longest stretch of unemployment (voluntary or otherwise) I have "endured" (not at all to suggest it has been difficult for me, and not at all to diminish the struggles of others going without work). I have read similar stories from folks - hundreds of submitted applications, staggering numbers of examples of folks being ghosted at all points of the recruitment process, final round interviews only to be told there are other folks with bigger metaphorical muscles or shinier teeth analogies gunning for the same job, et cetera... Add another one onto the pile if you're keeping score (102 days and counting). If you're hiring in Software Engineering leadership, however, do drop a note.

Check out the latest monthly IT Job Trends Report from the North Carolina Technology Association (NC TECH). Hiring has held steady in recent months, though still at half the level of a year ago. The unemployment rate nationally is 4% but the tech unemployment rate is just 2.5%. And the trend continues of most tech hiring being done by non-tech companies. https://lnkd.in/ePNZ3aJH

Quick Jobsearch Tip #922: Apply for jobs that you're not a 100% match for. Usually, requirements in job postings are describing the absolute ideal candidate, but hiring managers will frequently be happy with someone who hits even 60% of the requirements. You shouldn't let a thought like "I only have experience in 3 out of the 4 listed tech" discourage you from applying. I got a job once where the posting requested someone with 5 years of experience. I had only about 6 months at the time. 😱

We understand its hard to stand out when applying for jobs so here are our top 3 things we look for when hiring at Shape. Make sure your CV is sent in a pdf format, this will make it easy to open and ensures the formatting is consistent. Make sure your technical/non technical skills are up to date and as relevant as possible to the job you are applying for When listing your experience, ensure you highlight what your role was and what you accomplished as an individual not just what the team overall completed.

“We make it an entry-level job, but require 3-5 years of experience.” This feels like the hiring direction of too many companies… My LinkedIn feed last year was filled with people talking about the struggles of the job search journey — full manuscripts of a job description, laughable pay, combining multiple roles into one, being ghosted by employers, etc. We’re seeing younger Millennials and Gen Z lash out against these hiring practices, and I think it’s justified. More people are realizing they have the leverage when they’re not afraid to speak out against shoddy hiring practices. I’m glad we didn’t have this issue at Electriq. We frequently hired new grads, plus we built out a robust onboarding and career advancement program. As more of Gen Z enters the workforce, equitable hiring and ethical business practices (like not abusing job descriptions and young candidate naiveté) will be front and center. Something to consider if you’ve had struggles hiring…

Nearly 9 out of 10 recruiters say finding and hiring technical experts is hard. And considering Stack Overflow Survey data, it’s no wonder. The tech talent shortage is constantly increasing. Did you know that 94% of software engineers are not looking for a job when you try to contact them? 😱 #hiringtips #techtalent #itrecruitment

“It feels impossible at times.” The class of 2024 is facing a tough job market. Hiring has slowed across the U.S., and entry-level jobs are getting more competitive in the wake of white-collar layoffs. Even though some entry-level jobs have gotten harder to land, industries experiencing staffing shortages like education and construction are still hiring new college grads. And instead of wrapping campus hiring in the fall, as employers have in recent years, many are recruiting into summer, according to new research from LinkedIn. These are the industries hiring the most entry-level talent, according to LinkedIn. ⬇️
