NERC’s 2023 Long-Term Reliability Assessment (LTRA) finds that sharp increases in peak demand forecasts and the potential for higher generator retirements are raising concerns for electric reliability over the next 10 years. The assessment highlights the mounting pressure faced by industry to keep pace with accelerating electricity demand, energy needs and transmission system adequacy as the resource mix transitions. NERC’s latest reliability report reinforces what many of us already know. Coal is not a reliable resource. In fact, the coal fleet had the highest forced outage rates of all generation types. Coal plants had a forced outage rate of 12%, a 50% increase in outages since 2014. In addition to being dirty and expensive coal simply can’t deliver when we need it.

NERC has posted for 45-day industry comment its proposed revisions to Appendices 2, 5A, and 5B of the Rules of Procedure to identify and address unregistered inverter-based resources that are connected to the bulk #power system, as directed by FERC. Learn more here: https://ow.ly/PnIo50PLbnN

This is a very important initiative as our electric grid continues to transition to inverter-based generation resources. NERC needs to hear from all corners of the industry on these proposed revisions. In other words, “ally ally in come free” (or whatever regional variant you used as a kid!).
