Addressing environmental issues and tackling gender-based violence (GBV) need not be mutually exclusive goals. A recent NORC evaluation of USAID grantee programs shows that integrated approaches can be highly effective. Our comprehensive evaluation involved seven grantees worldwide, and indicates that programs utilizing pre-implementation assessments and demonstrating the flexibility to adapt to unforeseen challenges were particularly successful in: 👉 Significantly raising awareness about GBV among grantees. 👉 Strengthening the capacity of local environmental organizations to address GBV. 👉 Reducing economic, social, and intimate partner GBV. NORC’s Jessica Wallach explains that "bundling GBV sensitization training with livelihood activities that were of economic value to participants and their spouses could help break through initial resistance." Women's participation in environmental protection and ending sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) is vital for Sierra Leone's sustainable development. Women, as primary caregivers and resource managers, bring essential knowledge to natural resource management, leading to more effective environmental policies. Empowering women in these roles ensures comprehensive solutions that meet community needs. Addressing SGBV is equally crucial, as it enables women and girls to fully contribute to society, including environmental efforts. Supporting women's leadership and advocating for their protection fosters a more just, equitable, and sustainable Sierra Leone. Attorney-at-Law | Black Feminist Fund Fellow 2022 | Human Rights and Gender Policy | Caribbean Feminist
This week I addressed the Human Rights Council on behalf of Antigua and Barbuda during the interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur holding the mandate for Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) The Special Rapporteur presented her report to the council on Economic Violence faced by women and girls and specifically looked at the intersections with exploitative sexual violence. I took the opportunity to highlight that Antigua and Barbuda is committed to ending VAWG and has underscored this commitment on the international level through the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for Small Island Developing States adopted at the 4th International SIDS Conference. As Smalls States like Antigua and Barbuda work to address VAWG, we face financial and technical capacity constraints. This is further compounded by climate change impacts as we prioritise moving resources toward adaptation and mitigation. As our national gender machinery struggles to cope with the demand for services, we ask for the international donor community to support small states as we work towards affirming the Human Rights of Women and Girls and eradicating all forms of intersecting violence against women. #HRC56 #GenderEquality

Today, on #EarthDay, we invite you to consider the unique challenges women face and the solutions they bring to the climate crisis. #DidYouKnow that women are hit hardest by the climate crisis? Indigenous, racialized and disabled women are disproportionally harmed by systems of poverty, making them more vulnerable to the consequences of climate crisis. Women are also leading efforts to protect environmental human rights and have invaluable expertise that can help protect our planet. At NAWL, we truly believe #EarthNeedsFeminism.

🔛 Kris Kris Foster, Jacynth Bassett and Tribeni Chougule explore an important topic: ✔️Building full inclusion into our ESG strategies. The key challenge is that these communities are not at the table. ✔️They are used to people speaking about them and for them, but it needs to be their voice being heard. ✔️From inclusion of the disabled community to ageism and refugees facing social disparities, they agree that representation matters – it changes not only how you see yourself, but how others see you. ✔️They highlight that hope is the key thing here – if we work in unity and work in openness, we can do it together. #EWPN2023

During the 78th session of the UN General Assembly held over the last week in New York, world leaders came together to assess the progress made towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As we approach the halfway mark on the journey to the SDGs' 2030 deadline, it's disheartening to note that none of the 17 goals, which are designed to eliminate poverty and protect the environment are currently on course for successful attainment. In an article featured on the Aga Khan Foundation UK website, we explore potential solutions to address this challenge and examine the role that The Learning Hub can play in contributing to these efforts. https://lnkd.in/ej4MDTEd
