"Picture a great team that you were once a part of... What made that team great?" I asked this question to several people this week and their answers were all surprisingly similar. (see right side of image). "Now picture one of the worst teams you've been a part of. What was going on there?" Again, strikingly similar answers. (now look to the left). It may not be as simple as this faux math equation below, but there is some truth to the notion that great teams don't just happen by coincidence; there are formulas that produce reliable team dynamics. The Five Behaviors Model is so Powerful. Key Point: If we wait until everyone agrees on a decision (aka: get consensus) we will make decisions that are too slow, too late and probably equally dissatisfying for everyone. However, giving people the opportunity to weigh-in before a decision is made increases buy-in. Even when the decision doesn’t go their way. Great wisdom.

The Five Behaviours framework (an extension of DISC) is an extremely powerful model for understanding how to create high performance in the workplace. The foundation is trust - which is different for different personality types. We must firstly understand how the lack of trust shows up in the workplace (which can turn into toxic behaviours and ultimately toxic cultures), then identify how to adapt our approach to build trust with people who are different to ourselves. Then we move on to understanding healthy and unhealthy conflict styles - which again, are different for different personality types. It is not about the golden rule of treating others like WE want to be treated, but the platinum rule of treating others like THEY want to be treated by firstly understanding their preferences, then adapting to meet their needs. It is only when we get these two foundational pieces clear that we can move on to commitment, accountability and results achievement.
