The Future of Emoji: AI Customization 🤨 You've probably heard about Apple's announcement to allow AI-generated custom emoji creation in iOS 18. As someone who has built a company on visual thinking and communication, I have some thoughts! The core strength of emoji has been their universality. A simple 😂 means the same across messaging apps, platforms, and cultures. Emoji provide a shared visual vocabulary that transcends languages. Apple's AI emoji creator promises ultra personalization - generating custom emoji that look just like you or whatever you can imagine. Amazing creative potential, but it also risks fragmenting emoji away from their universal understanding. If my 😇 looks completely different than yours, do we still interpret the meaning the same way? Customized visuals could make communication less clear, not more expressive. There are also complex ethical questions around AI generation of visuals at scale. We're venturing into uncharted territory. Don't get me wrong, I'm really intrigued by these AI capabilities! But I can't help but wonder if unlimited customization undermines what made emoji so powerful in the first place - their iconic simplicity and shared meaning across the globe. What's your take? Is AI emoji customization an exciting progression or a risky step away from universal visuals? I'm really curious to hear your perspectives! 👇

I’m a big believer in plain language. I would even argue that we have too many emojis now requiring additional interpretations. Keep it simple people.
