8 Lessons from someone whose unemployment just ran out 1. Being unemployed in 2024 is different than at any time in most of our working lives. What you did in the past will probably not work. Dive in with an open mind. 2. You better know someone. 7 of the 9 jobs I interviewed for in my almost 5 month hunt were referrals. All 2024 interviews were referrals. 3. Spend less time applying and at least half of your time finding connections in those companies and networking (more locally than on LinkedIn unless you are remote exclusive). Focus on your field/industry. I posted last week about successful LinkedIn cold connecting with the RIGHT people and having chats with them. Link in comments. 4. I wish I would have been proactive in getting a part-time job. My husband was laid off unexpectedly a month ago. We thought only one of us would be laid off at a time. The universe wasn’t listening. Don’t wait. 5. Fix your profile. I’m finally getting at least one recruiter reaching out weekly about a job. It’s taken months of tweaking to get it to work and I don't honestly know what did it other than I continue to finetune based on the plethora of job descriptions I've seen. I’ve been told by a couple of recruiters my headline is interesting and my picture inviting. (My ‘Your Headline Sucks’ post is attached in the comments.) 6. Don't death scroll on your Excel application spreadsheet. We all have one, but you can't dwell on it. This is something I get a Goldstar for NOT doing. I've heard people rattle off how many jobs they've applied for and how many responses they've gotten. You hear the pain and how personal they take it. It's self-harm. It's cruel.  Stop it. 7. The job posting system is broken. Job descriptions have been neglected for years and need major overhauls. They don’t always match the actual job and the job post doesn’t match what hiring managers want. Rinse. Repeat. I talked to two recruiters about positions I applied for. One job was mis-listed as a specialist when it was a manager position. The other had a certification knockout requirement that wasn’t listed. This miscommunication hurts everyone involved and illustrates why you apply when you don’t have all of the qualifications or think you're overqualified. Because you never know. 8. Wake up ready to slay it. You have GOT to find a way to self-motivate and smile. As I mentioned in a post last week (link in the comments), I FORTIFY myself against the negativity and noise. Your skills are transferrable. I am 100% certain your feed is full of career coaches, recruiters, hiring Mangers and other W2'ers telling you different ways to get a job, how to get an interview & advance through additional rounds in this tough market for laid off tech folks. I am also 100% sure NO ONE is telling you how to create an income so you do not find yourself in this position again. Since being laid off in May - Our Short Term Rental has netted $16,870 and it's July 11. 4 weeks ago, I purchased an additional home (as an unemployed shmuck) 3 blocks off the beach and received our first booking in the first 24 hours from going live. Yesterday - We put 2 additional homes under contract as fix n' flips. YOUR SKILLS ARE TRANSFERRABLE. MONEY IS IN THE MARKET.. You're just not going after it. But you go ahead and apply for 100's of tech jobs.. Maybe you'll get that six figure salary again.

#JobHuntLiveUpdate: It is done! I have signed a contract today. TL;DR: ∙ Browsed through 18,871+ job openings and applied to only 36 jobs ∙ Got rejected in 91% of the attempts; 25% never even replied to the application ∙ Had 42 interviews; 50% of those only with 3 organizations ∙ Received 3 offers of which I signed 1 today While I want to celebrate together with you, I also want to take some time to reflect on this process. I would lie if I said it was easy. But let me share the full #UnfilteredTruth story with you today. In the past 415 days, I've seen 18,871+ job openings (estimated number). I've reviewed many, but not all of them. While I felt a lot of internal and external pressure to start looking for a job right after I was laid off from my previous company, I realized that I needed to take a break. I deserved it. And hence, I slowed down, which meant I was still looking at jobs but wasn't applying that hastily. I was very selective, so out of these almost 20,000 potential jobs, I only put 80 of them on my long list and only applied to 36 of them. After all, I spent a lot of time thinking about what I want to do next, and what I don't want to do (which seems easier). It so happened that 70% of the jobs I put on my list were in the so-called "impact" sector. It became clearer and clearer, that the focus on real live impact was very important to me and a deciding factor. Then the craziness of the recruiting processes caught up to me, as it does with almost everybody. One thing, I always believed in, was true this time, as it is always. To be successful, you need to fail. This, I call the #FailureSuccessRate. I was rejected in 91% of the attempts. In 25% of the cases, the organizations didn't even respond to my application at all. But what was even more painful were organizations, where I successfully moved forward in the recruiting process deciding to ghost me from one moment to another. In three instances, I decided to withdraw from the offer/application, because it was not what I really wanted. In total, I had 42 recruiting rounds and interviews, of which 50% were made up by only three organizations. Yes, those rounds can be intense. Yet, in the end, it all paid off, and I'm super excited to start my new job in November. I'll be sharing more about my new role in the coming days. For now, let's remember that hunting for jobs is hard for everyone, no matter how skilled you are. It's not always about you, but about all the circumstances, the desires of the organizations, the mood of the recruiters, the fit at that moment, and the other people in the process.
