Why has Africa remained poor despite having vast mineral resources? Today, during our Mandela Washington Fellowship Pre-Fellowship Orientation I had an opportunity to share my story. I come from a mineral resource-rich community that boasts of world class coal and lithium reserves. The community has over 30 mining and mineral processing projects. However nothing has changed for the community. All we have "gained" are polluted rivers, degraded environments, unfair labour practices and eviction threats to pave way for mining initiatives. It is high time that we stand up and hold big corporates to account. It is high time that we accelerate the implementation of UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
