Program Mgmt = Problem Mgmt?? In matrix orgs, where multiple objectives/priorities of different teams collide; cross functional collaboration becomes key to effective execution. Program Management has been a new buzz word especially in startups where CFT (cross functional teams) have to work on a key program together. Devoid on uni-functional control, these programs need hard coaxing and cajoling across functions. And thats when program managers come handy; who run after teams trying to align/realign, handle new problems from across functions (finance, legal, supply chain...)and move forward. Interestingly, due to the arduous nature of the role, i got to know from a youngster - that it's also called "Problem management" 😇!! Whatever you call it, thats the way future works. Agree? #work #programmanagement

Is the #technicalprogrammanager (in general, the program manager / #projectmanager archetype, including also #scrummasters) increasingly redundant in the face of organisations scaling down rather than scaling up? This article got me thinking about this as"[A]t large organizations that aren’t growing, #engineeringmanagers can have more space to expand their scopes....So, yes, those managers would have additional capacity to lead cross-organizational projects. In fact, doing so could provide a challenge, which is better than devising 'busywork' that doesn’t meaningfully help the organization." This is a fair observation and one that I have also seen personally. Either the #tpm become a more generalist program manager that works on cross-functional programs across business with heavy tech-focus, or on the opposite extreme, become specialised handling programs like data or infra. Or for some, could be a pathway to be single-threaded leadership handling both product and engineering aspects of development. WDYT? https://lnkd.in/gwqsq6vS

I encounter this excuse every week in my DMs. Marty Cagan put it better than I could. While some are focusing on making Project Managers feel not-excluded, Marty is calling us out. And we need it, as an industry. At least we need both. The always pragmatic managers that never utters a challenging statement without a "it depends", and the people calling us out on our BS. I've talked to a PM today that made time for their customers problems in the shipping industry. Not easy. But he didn't accept "we're different' as an excuse. While not all companies that are successful work with empowered teams, few successful companies are started that don't. And the competitive landscape of tech will be the forcing function. So I'd urge you to get on board. --- PS: What's the most unlikely industry/company/setting where you've seen empowered teams leave the feature factory?

Systems are integrated outcomes of the synchronized functions of their parts. Rusell Ackoff explained #systemsthinking as: 🧬 A system is a whole that cannot be divided into interdependent parts. 🧬 A system is a product of the interactions of its parts. 🧬The performence of a system depends on how the parts fit together, not how they act separately. Systems thinking is a mindset that allows to think end-to-end and be better prepared for the future by analysing the trends, patterns and behaviors. For #projectmanagement and #productmanagement this is a critical skill. Projects are outcome of multiple elements working together as an unit and a systemic interactions provide better #project outcome. The iceberg model of systems thinking adapted from the Systems Thinking: The Iceberg Model explains only 10% events are visible which we see as an outcome or result. Rest 90% are hidden causes behind the outcome — 🟢 Mental Models covers the beliefs which stimulates the #behavior causing the outcome. In a #project set up this would typical cover – misaignment is strategic goals, vision, awareness etc. 🟢 Structures are the influences that drive the repeated behavior. This part of the iceberg includes ways of working, exexution models, feedback gathering, PDCA etc. 🟢 Pattern includes the trend of a behavior. For example if a #product continuously report #quality issues and declining #marketdemand, then obviously quality and marketing team need to analyse their trends. Undoubtedly #systemsthinking is a success factor for Project Managers! #projectmanager #productmanager #pmi https://lnkd.in/eZsPJmAG

Mastering the art of organized chaos 🎭. That's the true essence of a Program Manager 💼. Imagine a conductor 🎵, directing a symphony of cross-functional teams, where each instrument represents a different project 📊. The melody? That's the harmonious execution of strategic goals 🏹. Here's an uncommon perspective 🔄: program management isn't about control; it's about influence. It's not about commanding every note but guiding the orchestra to play in sync 🎶. Program managers don't just manage tasks; they manage possibilities ✨. They don't just handle projects; they handle transformation 🦋. The real reward? It isn't just the completion of the program but the growth 🌱 that comes with it. If you're a program manager, remember this: You're not just a taskmaster. You're a conductor of change 🌎. You're the maestro of progress 🚀. You're the catalyst for transformation 🌀. Next time you're managing a program, don't just focus on the tasks. Look at the bigger picture 🌅. Listen to the music 🎵. And remember, you're creating more than just a program. You're creating a masterpiece 🖼️. Do you agree? Share your thoughts and let's shape the future of program management together 🤝.
