WHY YOU SHOULDN’T TEACH THE SCISSOR TECHNIQUE IN HIGH JUMP! When we introduce our students to a sport or event, we naturally want to make sure that all of our students can have some measure of success. We can do this by simplifying the activity or, more often, by using differentiation for everyone to be successful at their own level. I find that many teachers like to teach the scissor technique for exactly this reason, believing that the Fosbury Flop technique is too advanced for their young students. However, I’ve taught the flop technique to students as young as 7 with no problems because it is more about having an understanding of the event than it is the students having the skills. When we thing about what the skills are to perform a basic flop technique, students will run on a curve (easy!), they will jump from one leg (easy!), and they will rotate through 90 degrees (easy!). At a basic level, the high jump doesn’t involve any skills that our students haven’t already learned as Fundamental Movement Skills. The only difference in the high jump is the unique combination of these skills which creates the flop shape. The high jump therefore provides us with an excellent opportunity to challenge and develop the Fundamental Movement Skills of our students in a fun and engaging way, within the context of the high jump. BUT THERE’S MORE…Without fully understanding the role of the scissor jump in the high jump, you might actually be teaching your students to opposite of good high jump technique! WANT TO FIND OUT HOW… Join us on Sunday for our Mastering the Jumps Workshop! As we navigate the ever-changing landscape of Physical Education, it's crucial to pause, reflect, and decide what does PE mean today? 🏃♂️🔍 Does it mean educating students how to move physically well? Or does it mean using physical movement to educate? When I was in school, PE was synonymous with sport. However, with the educational landscape evolving and a gradual shift away from competitive sports, it's essential to reassess its role and decide what responsibility PE has for teaching social topics, and which of these topics should have a home within a Physical Education curriculum. On average, schools allow 15min in the morning and afternoon for recess, with a 30min lunch recess. 1 hour of time outside the four walls of their classroom, is not enough. Exploring and embracing the outdoors, is crucial to a child's emotional, physical, and social development. Here I look at the many benefits associated with outdoor education, as well as some simple ways to get started both at school and with home learning. We need to do better, especially when studies show just how critical this time is for our young people. How much time do children at your school get to be outside? Do they get any time to actually explore and learn outdoors? Do you bring them outside for story time, or independent reading? I'd love to hear what your children get to do! #outdooreducation #outdoors #outdoorlearning #children #schools #getoutside #learning #explore #freshair #beyondthefourwalls #play #playbasedlearning #lifeskills #nature

Building Physical Literacy in PE through Think, Move, Feel, Connect objectives... Although sports and physical activity should be the foundation of any PE Program, we need to ensure that PE is still for all, and not just the few higher performing students 🏃♂️ As we take a sports focus, students will naturally focus on the outcome of the game. This can detract from the learning objectives of the lesson as students sacrifice skill development for quick wins. It also creates an environment of winners and losers meaning that half of the students will leave the lesson frustrated... If we want all of our students to leave our lessons feeling empowered and excited to continue their engagement of sport outside of the classroom, we need to use sport to tap into their core values 💯 That’s why Performance Pathways is taking forwards the great work in early years and primary PE of our partners Beyond the Physical, and will be using the THINK, MOVE, FEEL, CONNECT lesson objectives across our sports curriculums 💪 Swipe across to learn more about the THINK, MOVE, FEEL, CONNECT framework! And don’t forget to join the Waiting List using the link below 👇 to be the first to be invited to our launch event this summer! https://lnkd.in/dDws3NGB #physicaleducation #schoolsport #sportsleaders #physicalliteracy #PE
