Looking forward to this webinar! If you’re in philanthropy and you’re interested in learning more about how to have an impact through shareholder engagement, check it out! #impactinvesting #philanthropy
Over the past year, I have had the pleasure of collaborating with Laura Campos (Nathan Cummings Foundation), Laura Nixon and David Stocks (The Educational Foundation of America) and so many others to try and figure out how to transform and increase how #philanthropy uses its power and privilege as #shareholders of the world's largest and most influential #public #companies to do good. If you work at a #foundation who is eager to increase its impact, align more of its #endowment with its #grantmaking goals and grantees' #campaigns, we invite you to register (https://lnkd.in/eYhzXrh7) to learn more about our "learn-by-doing" pilot cohort as well as how to apply. Tell your friends, this work takes a village. P.S. - Tremendous excitement and gratitude to Rickke Mananzala (New York Foundation) for agreeing to support this burgeoning collaborative, we're so grateful for NYF's values alignment and strategic partnership.

How can we shake up the ‘unwritten rules’ of philanthropy to better fund and support Black-led and Black-serving organizations for the betterment of all? A new survey from the YOUNG BLACK & GIVING BACK INSTITUTE shares how grant makers can be more equitable and inclusive. Read more from Rasheeda Childress in the The Chronicle of Philanthropy: https://bit.ly/44WxLqF To reimagine opportunity in America, we must invest in the genius of Black leaders. Earlier this year, New Profit, Ballmer Group and Echoing Green announced $42.5M over the next 5 years to support Black-led nonprofits focused on improving economic mobility. https://bit.ly/3On5QLz

For Candid insights, in my conversation with Heather Infantry, Giving Gap's CEO, I dig into their newest report, the State of Black Nonprofits Report: 2024. Highlights include attributes of Black-founded nonprofits, the importance of funding them, the implications of the funding gap, and how they can best be supported. One key note: On average, Black-led nonprofits operate with revenues 24% lower than white-led ones. That's a $20 million funding gap. https://lnkd.in/dnwpxt2y

Some great news for Rhizhome, one of the organizations that I admire, for their commitment to a truly bottom-up, youth-led approach to community and social change!
🍃 3 things 🍃 1) Inside Philanthropy wrote an article about our partnership with the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation! Cat Martin and Olivia Thai, MSW, I appreciate your support, understanding, and civic faith more than you could ever know :) https://lnkd.in/g3AX4VMH 2) We're hiring young leaders 16-22 year old as paid Community Organizers! Please share our application with any young people who'd want to work 3-4 hours a week, support other young people, and help build Rhizome in 2024. Applications are brief and are due this Sunday, December 10! https://lnkd.in/gG8UfGUX 3) It's been a long few months in Rhizome world. I'm surrounded by incredible people, trying to do a really hard thing together. If you want to trade notes on power sharing and/or youth organizing in the new year, reach out!

Here is Part 2 of our three-part series sharing how and why we changed the language to better reflect our organization and our work. Part 2 "How Community Partners Guided Our Refined Grant Strategies" shares our (modestly) updated grantmaking goals + guidelines, to be more clear about what we support and why, by trying to use consistent language, and offering examples and definitions. The important takeaway here for #philanthropy is that how we move resources must be centered in what our communities need from us, and that requires us both to ask them what they need, and then to honor what they tell us by putting our funding, time, connections, and support where they need it.
At IPMF, community input is crucial to us as we aim to be transparent and intentional (the tenets of trust-based #philanthropy). That’s why we invited our grantees to help us refine our grant strategies. In part 2 of her essay IPMF President Molly de Aguiar shares insights into our community feedback process and the resulting strategies. Read the full story👇 https://lnkd.in/dnJAzyqT

In the process of developing three non-profits over ten years, my greatest joy? Helping a dozen other nonprofits across the US flourish by sharing our model for media, messaging, storytelling, and donor cultivation. My message: be different by design from other nonprofits. Share your three defining differences that set you apart from other nonprofits. My guide for this nonprofit mentor coaching has been Youngme Moon, the Donald K. David Professor and senior associate dean and chair of the MBA program at Harvard Business School. She is the author of Different - Escaping the Competitive Herd – Youngme Moon (2010) - Standing Out in a World Where Conformity Reigns but Exceptions Rule. “Effective marketing is the art of collaboration – ascertain the dimension of our donor’s desire, paying heed to things they want, but paying attention to what they do not want. · What are donors looking for today? A sound more resonant, meaningful, a vibration that they can experience, in their bones, as being somehow ………different. · Different requires an approach more adventurous. · Marketing sits at the intersection where a nonprofit meets people. · Messaging is to be discursive in the unpredictable way donors are discursive. · Differentiation is a way of thinking. It’s a mindset. It’s a commitment to engage with people…in a manner they will value, respect and yes, perhaps even celebrate.” Dorothy Day Tampa – different, by design.

I was honored to join our Montgomery Community Media CEO Jasmine Nykole White, MA, MPA at the Inaugural Nonprofit Conference at Montgomery College. The theme was "Building Nonprofit Infrastructure to Strengthen Community Services.' Jasmine and I hosted a breakout session on "Using Media Tools to Advance Your Mission." Are you looking for media tools for your nonprofit? Here are ten tips to get you started: 1. Storytelling Videos: Create compelling videos that showcase your nonprofit's mission, impact, and success stories. Use beneficiaries, volunteers, and staff testimonials to connect with your audience emotionally. 2. Live Streaming: Use platforms like Facebook Live, YouTube Live, or Instagram Live to broadcast events, fundraisers, and behind-the-scenes content. Engage with your audience in real time. 3. Podcast Series: Start a podcast to share in-depth stories, interviews, and discussions related to your nonprofit's mission or that of your grantees and partners. Podcasts are a great way to connect with your audience and provide valuable information. 4. Training: Take advantage of training programs like Montgomery Community Media offers. We offer courses in video production, editing, social media marketing, and more tailored to the needs of nonprofits. 5. Partnerships : Collaborate with local media outlets or influencers to feature your nonprofit's work. This partnership can help you reach a wider audience. 6. Website and Blog: Maintain a blog to regularly update stakeholders about your activities, achievements, and upcoming events. Incorporate multimedia content like images and videos into your blog posts. 7. Newsletter Campaigns: Send regular newsletters featuring stories, updates, and calls to action to your subscribers. Include multimedia elements to make them visually appealing. 8. Volunteer Endorsements: Feature video testimonials from volunteers, members and stake holders sharing their experiences and why they chose to support your nonprofit. 9. Optimize Operations: Use self-guided multimedia for internal purposes by creating training videos to onboard new volunteers or staff efficiently. Produce orientation videos to familiarize new members with how to do business with your organization. 10. Virtual Meetings: Utilize video conferencing tools for team or board member meetings, reducing the need for in-person gatherings and guaranteeing participation.
