At the World Championships in Budapest (2022), USA’s Anita Alvarez sank to the bottom of the pool. As the seconds ticked by, her coach, Andrea Fuentes, scanned the deck with growing concern. She noticed that Anita had been underwater far too long. Without a moment’s hesitation, fully clothed, Andrea dove into the water. She found Anita unconscious, unable to kick, paddle, or save herself. If Andrea hadn’t noticed, Anita would have drowned. But Andrea knew Anita. She was vigilant, recognizing the signs immediately, and acted without thinking twice. This story has struck a chord with me deeply. When you find yourself submerged for too long, who are the people who will look for you, realize you're struggling to come up for air, and dive in to rescue you when you have no strength left to fight? Who are those people in your life? And more importantly, can someone count on you to be that vigilant person for them? The one who will notice when they’re submerged too long, and without a second thought, dive in to lift them up when they’re out of fight and fuel to navigate the turbulent waters we call life? I am deeply grateful to God for His grace in surrounding me with protective friends and colleagues. You are a strong woman and a wonderful friend. We all need a supportive village to be our best. You have built a team that not only supports you but spiderwebs out to support a much larger group of people in the National Security community.
