I've been both and have made the decision to work for myself, but by no means do I say everyone should go for it although I believe everyone could. Starting a business isn't something you either "can or can't do". Nobody has any clue how to do it when they start. It's all about getting yourself going. Just start. It's encouraging news if you fail. Meta's whole take on innovation is "fail fast and fail often". Make mistakes and understand how to extract the lessons from them afterwards. The more you fail, the more you'll know. So if you are debating starting a business and you're still employed somewhere I will always recommend starting it on the side of your main job. Yes, it takes sacrificing personal time and weekends to do it like this, but it is a whole new second job. I don't recommend quitting your main job until your "side hustle" can't get you about 50-75% of the income you've been receiving until now. Be smart about your financial situation and take calculated risks! If you have any questions ALWAYS feel free to reach out to people who've done it before. They win with strategy over teams that run without rest & burn out. Step back and look at your year: There will be times your business cycle demands running. As a Marketing leader, what can you do to clear the path? And when you can you slow the pace… to ensure team members get rest? What extra care & feeding will better prepare them for the next sprint? We had a great week of collaboration and ideation, and to cap it off our team embarked on a kayak team-building adventure that left us all inspired and re-energized! Here's what my many deployments to Cyberstan and the bug planets taught me about surviving the corporate jungle: 1. Friendly Fire Isn't Friendly: while fighting bugs or bots, one wrong placement of your mortar turret can end your team's mission abruptly. Similarly, in the corporate world, overworking yourself can lead to burnout—essentially, friendly firing your own team by dropping the ball on important projects. 2. Dive Into the Unknown: Just as we dive onto hostile alien planets, sometimes leadership requires plunging into uncharted business territories. This might mean taking on tasks that you don't feel you're ready to, like becoming a manager and hiring a bunch of SDRs (the SaaS equivalent of the humble Helldiver) 3. Extract Under Fire: Ever tried extracting from a planet when the odds are stacked against you? Ever look at the escape timer and realize your teammate is halfway across the map with all the super samples? Remember, sometimes you have to leave your teammates behind (lay them off) for the good of the mission (the VC portfolio your company is a part of) no matter how many super samples (fake pipeline) they have! 4. Stratagem Deployment Is Key: When in combat, dropping a turret at the right time can save the day. In the office, it’s about deploying the right resource at the crucial moment. Whether it's a new software tool or an unexpected team outing, the right move at the right time keeps morale high and the gears moving smoothly. 5. Respawn and Rally: Finally, every Helldiver knows the pain of a brutal defeat, only to respawn and fight another day. Every project setback, cold call where someone tells you to kill yourself, missed deadline, or overlooked email is a chance to learn, respawn, and rally your team to victory. So, next time you're logging late hours or strategizing your next business move, remember these lessons from the frontline. Being in a Saas company isn't just about KPIs —it's about diving headfirst into the chaos, with the dedication of a Helldiver facing a cyborg army. I signed up for a 10k race! The catch? It was just two weeks before the event and I'm not even a runner. So with only two weeks of prep I challenged myself through it. On race day, the big surprise wasn’t just that I finished the race, but that I did so in great condition, with energy to spare. Here’s what I learned from this experience: 🏃🏼♀️ Commit to your goals: Whether it's running a race or launching a new business project (like SoulClip Studio), commitment is the first step. Deciding to go for it, no matter how daunting it seems, sets the foundation for success. 🏃🏼♀️ Embrace the journey: Training in such a short period wasn’t easy. There were days when I doubted myself, but embracing the journey and taking it one step at a time made all the difference. 🏃🏼♀️ Push beyond your comfort zone: I regretted signing up many times during those 2 weeks, but the truth is on the race day it felt amazing and led to unexpected achievements.
