Over the years, different gospels , campaigns and agendas have been raised about the balance between the lives of both genders (male and female). Gender Equality, popular participation, equal rights and inclusivity have been the main words used to encourage the development of this balance particularly in respect to the female gender. To even this distribution in all fields and sectors in the world has been no easy feat. However, it’s worthy to note that with changing times comes improvements and more acceptance of females to take on leadership roles and become forces to reckon with in various fields. The fashion industry thus in its evolution has also witnessed the improving participation of women in the field, a scenario which gives credence to the theme of the International Women’s Day 2024 tagged “Inspire Inclusion”. Around the world we have women who have gained global recognition for their mastery of the fashion craft. Why does queer representation and diversity matter in sustainable fashion? Because different perspectives help to consider ways to rethink, interrupt, and evolve the status quo 💥 As the inaugural Fashion Diversity, Equality and Inclusion report showed earlier this year, the larger landscape of fashion is far behind on progress as only 9% of executive and 11% of leadership roles like chief financial officer and creative director are held by people of colour. 39% and 24% are held by women, respectively. And, according to a 2024 study by LinkedIn, 64% of LGBTQ+ professionals wish there were more people like them in the workplace. 💡 As we approach the halfway point in Pride month, this is on our mind—and likely contributes to major brands failing to take action, to rethink how the business works and how they can be catalysts for change. We’re reminded of these words from MI Leggett of Official Rebrand—an artist and designer who takes an anti-waste and gender-free approach to fashion. Each garment or ensemble embodies stories of expectation, aspiration & limitation experienced by women during its respective period at the Met Museum's “Women Dressing Women” exhibit. For example, consider the evolution of professional attire for women over time. During the early days of the suffragette movement, when women fought for equal voting rights, they donned tailored blouses paired with high collars and voluminous skirts – symbolizing strength, independence & defiance amidst restrictive gender norms. By embracing diversity & drawing inspiration from various periods across human history, designers have been able to create innovative pieces that challenge conventional ideas regarding womanhood & celebrate uniqueness. Excited to reflect on the incredible experience of hosting an engaging workshop at JD Institute of Fashion Technology, exploring the fascinating realm of "Fashion Beyond Gender Norms - Styling for Individuality." Witnessing the participants immerse themselves in the session, sharing personal stories of defying gender norms in fashion, was truly heartwarming. Their eagerness to absorb styling tips for breaking free from the confining box of binary gender norms highlighted a collective desire for change. It's crucial to nurture these budding talents, for they are the architects of tomorrow's fashion landscape. As they scribbled down tips and tricks, I couldn't help but feel optimistic about the impact they will make in the industry. Embracing gender inclusivity and shattering traditional stereotypes in fashion is not just a choice; it's a responsibility. Fashion and styling, in my belief, are inherently expressive and transcend any predefined gender norms. Let's encourage a culture where creativity knows no boundaries. However, while we're seeing some progress, there's still a long way to go. Representation matters. Seeing disabled individuals in media and fashion not only fosters a sense of inclusion but also challenges stereotypes and broadens perspectives. It's crucial that these industries continue to evolve, ensuring that everyone's story is told and celebrated. Let's advocate for a world where representation is not the exception but the norm.
