As a Product Manager joining a new team, try not to change everything all at once You want to familiarize yourself with the people, product and terrain in your first few weeks When you have a good understanding of these three, then you can strategically plan how to achieve your short and long term product goals based on the understanding you now have of the Product Vision. You wouldn’t be hired if you weren’t needed in the first place. So, pull yourself together, carefully craft the master plan that helps you achieve all your product goals and blow minds like you always do. Product Manager's job is to make good decisions. But rarely, people talk about the second part - "realizing the value of that decision through execution". I recently watched Air and listened to @Acquired’s Nike episode - and a few values stuck with me from Nike. I believe one of their values separates great product managers from good product managers is: "Your job is not done until THE job is done". THE job can be many things. For PM, sometimes, THE job is never done. To me, THE job doesn’t end when you finish your product brief or one pager. It doesn’t stop when you finalized the design with your designer. It doesn’t stop when you kicked off with your engineers and handed the baton to them. THE job - for me - ends when you get the product launched despite significant QA effort, going back and forth with your team fixing bugs, creating materials to train your internal team and preparing communications for external users. It is when you track post-launch results and make sure the new feature didn’t result in a net negative. It is when you take that learning and share with your team and the broader company, and leverage that learning to help your team adjust your roadmap and decide on where THE next job is at. So you want to be great product managers? Make great decisions, but do your job until THE job - value of those decisions are realized - is done.

Sometimes, we tend to overthink our product as Product Managers, especially when it comes to its death. Is there a possibility of a product failing? Absolutely! Sometimes, product death is inevitable even after ticking all the boxes and applying all the product sense in the world. 💎 Product death can happen because your product is avant garde [ahead of its time, boundary pushing] and your target audience isn’t prepared for what it has to offer. 💎Even in the prime of a product, Product death can happen as a result of an unprecedented government/regulatory policy or as a result of another cutting edge technology rendering your product obsolete. 💎 And in typical product cycles, Product death could happen just because that product has reached its maturity phase and is now declining. At this phase, retiring the product is just inevitable. When this happens, as a Product Manager, don’t be afraid to repurpose your resources and pivot. Your first product doesn’t necessarily have to be your last. Salvage what you can and keep it moving! What products did you enjoy using in the past but don’t exist anymore? No matter if you're a junior Product Manager or a seasoned leader in product management a roadmap that you're presenting or supporting tells a lot about you, tells a lot about your strategic thinking. 4 things you can do to improve your Roadmaps: 1. Make your Roadmap about your entire ecosystem evolution not just focused on NPD/new features and keeping the infrastructure operational. Do add GTMs, campaigns, research as well. You can use colours to differentiate between these different themes or just group them into lanes; 2. Mark in your Roadmap not only the Themes but also the correlation with a strategy pillar or objective of the company (use shapes for this). Let's say that all things related to first pillar are marked with a triangle; 3. Mark the status. Aside the usual In Progress, Done, Blocked consider also states of Postponed, Dependencies. Use labels for this and lighter color shade for signalling progress; 4. Want to go sky high? Place a star next to the items with the highest impact (or whatever visual symbol you believe is relevant for your organization). As a stakeholder or a leader I now have a much better understanding of what you're trying to accomplish, how that fits in the grand scheme of things and how I can support you better.
