Support is increasing across Canada for Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs), with more than 50 Indigenous communities currently funded to establish or plan IPCAs. Traditional systems of land tenure (now and in the past) have rarely been recognised in #CongoBasin. Securing formal, legal community rights to land and resources is one of the most effective forms of habitat protection and the strongest defence against displacement. “By tapping into African culture and engaging local communities, the conservation of the Congo Basin forest can be achieved in a sustainable and effective manner” Evidence shows that conservation can be better when in the hands of local communities. https://lnkd.in/eSt4QMd3

Currently, 16.7% of land in South Africa is under conservation. To meet the UN Goals of having 30% of our land under conservation estate by 2030, we need action now. “If we want to hit the target by 2030, we’ll need another 16 million hectares to be added to the estate. That’s adding [the equivalent of] the Kruger National Park and a bit every year to hit the 2030 target,” said Karl Naude, the director of protected area planning at the DFFE. Respect #Brazil recently recognising the Komi Memem River, also known as the Laje River, as an entity with the same rights as a person. This decision was made by an Indigenous councilman and is designed to protect the river's natural flow and the surrounding forest. This new law also acknowledges the river's role in human activities such as spirituality, recreation, and culture. #GOODNEWSTHURSDAY The Albanese Labor Government is investing $14.5 million to establish ten new #Indigenous Protected Areas (IPAs), to better #protect and #conserve��more of Australia’s #land and #sea! IPAs are areas of land and sea managed by Traditional Owners for #biodiversity conservation. There are currently 82 IPAs managed by #firstnationspeople and over 87 million hectares of land covered. Minister for the Environment and Water, Tanya Plibersek says "We are so lucky in Australia to have the world’s most successful environmentalists to learn from. Building relationships is essential to making a major impact, and the first step to building relationships is listening. Which is why Rewilding Africa CIC advocates “nature positive formal master land use planning” as a crucial first step in getting landscape recovery programs in place. We believe in the formation of sustainably planned “mega”Community Conservancies around all the national parks that will then place millions of hectares of land under good governance and conservation management, whilst also identifying and planning for productive land uses on select portions through investable concessionary rights,that provide the necessary and critical alternative livelihoods for the communities and in order to help subsidise the balance of the conservancy land to be restored, preserved and protected!
