Totally agree with this. There's so much pressure on every marketing team to prove ROI. But for PMM's, the most important work is to be helpful. Don't worry about whether another team owns a KPI. Instead, focus on driving value for the business cross functionally.

I have been unfortunately laid off from my position as marketing director at trimplement GmbH. Over the last year and a half, I have been building the marketing dept at trimplement from scratch, building marketing processes and coordinating relationships with sales, developing content and paid media strategy, and establishing partnerships. I understand this is a hard choice to ensure business continuity, so no hard feelings. However I am in the uncomfortable position of having to look for a new job in a very tough market. Over the last weeks, I had to cope with a relocation, lots of bureaucracy and the pain of finding a new job, which is truly disheartening. So I am asking for help. Stop hiring the VP of Marketing first. It should be a Growth/Marketing Manager with a coach. Too often, I see small companies starting with the VP and expecting the world from them. Their salary isn’t a marketing budget. If you think hiring them will result in instant growth, you’ll be wrong. Start by hiring someone junior (save on the comp) and partner them with someone who has been there and done that. This structure will be cheaper and likely lead to a quicker path to growth. Once you’ve got traction, bring someone more senior in, to help scale instead.

I was VP of Marketing. Chief Marketing Officer. Chief Brand Officer. I grew my career in marketing from PR intern to C-level over the course of 10 years. I learned a lot being around smart people and being part of an exec team: strategy, planning, M&A, partnerships, marketing, sales, customer success, product, hiring, firing, internal politics, hard decisions, the difference between an exec and a manager, competition, market forces, public perception, investors, advisors, culture, people management. One company I worked at from 0 grew to a billion dollar valuation Another company I worked at was acquired for $100M+ But through it all - despite being able to "play" the role of marketing exec - I've always found myself to be more of a creator. Anyone that has worked 1:1 with me knows that my true passion and skillset is in the creating: the ideas, the whiteboard, the copy, the campaign ideas, the marketing, the promotion. I write this not to poo poo on companies, executives, building your career, becoming a leader inside of company. That experience changed my life. That experience was required to get me here. But we are all built and wired different. Some love the people management, the strategy, the planning, the team. I am not one of those people. But in order to get here I had to do that part of the story for 10 years. But I've always enjoyed the solo work. I am so much more comfortable now as a "creator." And it's been that way for a bit - even before I was a CMO or VP or even Director, I was a "creator" - with a podcast + newsletter that I started in 2014. Now I get to do it full-time on my terms as opposed to nights and weekends (which, fwiw, would be nearly impossible with 2 kids that changed my life). There's nothing like the creative freedom that comes with working for yourself. Every day, every week, every month I can decide: - My goals - What I'm working on - On my terms - early Tuesday morning, not at all, or late Sunday night - Slow growth, fast growth, no growth - I can also change my mind on projects or not be married to sunk costs because "that's the annual plan we set" Don't rush to go quit your job. But take some time to zoom out and see the bigger picture. What skills are you acquiring now in your current role? What is your longer term vision? Work for yourself? Be at a company? Become a seasoned exec? Be a solo creator? Build a small team? Big team? I think it's important to have that frame now so you can make better career decisions along the way and get you on the path to where you want to be in 5-10 years.
