Nicole Stovall’s Post

I had the pleasure of attending the BIO International Convention in San Diego, which is the largest and most comprehensive bio tech conference with almost 19,000 global leaders across the industry. I was moved and inspired by the emotional fireside chat featuring EGOT winner and renown actor Viola Davis who shared how her past trauma and impoverished childhood fueled a desire to break down barriers for others who lack basic needs such as proper nutrition and healthcare. She shared a story about her daughter who, clearly the product of privilege, noticed an unhoused gentleman on the street one day and commented that he must be “dirty” and “smelly.” But then her daughter paused and quietly stated, “but he is my brother.” Thank you Ms. Davis for raising a compassionate young lady who sees the humanity in others, no matter their differences. With this theme in mind, the next day I had the honor of serving on a panel about “Building Successful DEI Programs in Life Science Companies” along with my esteemed co-panelists Matthew Silversten, Alessandra Ravetti and moderated by the amazingly talented Marredia Crawford. It was affirming to know that despite the rhetoric around “DEI backlash” life science companies are fueled by a shared desire to seek the humanity in diverse populations around the world and enable greater access to important medicines and products. For these companies, DEI is not simply a catchy (albeit somewhat controversial) term, it’s a business imperative.
