Time has flown by so quickly! It has already been a month since I received my Bachelor of Architecture from Kennesaw State University. I hope that you have been showered with love and support from family and friends, as I have, for such a rewarding accomplishment. I look forward to sharing my Senior Thesis, 'Stitching Atlanta's HBCUs: Campus Design as the Site of Integration,' and other works I have completed throughout my five years of school in future posts!
#UrbanDesign on Campus Part 3: Green Space
Most campus cores have well-developed green spaces. However, “a campus-wide constellation of verdant spaces is a hallmark of the best higher education environments,” says Principal and Global Planning Leader Yogesh Saoji, AIA, AICP. In part three of this series, Yogesh goes into detail on campus landscape aspects and their impacts on the #education experience: https://bit.ly/3s1k2Bn#HigherEducation#UrbanEducation#EducationDesign
As summer arrives and campuses quiet down, the hidden hustle behind higher education projects comes to life. For months, design teams like ours have been diligently laying the groundwork for the next generation of educational facilities that will shape the future.
Take the upcoming The University of Georgia Dining and Wellness Center, set to open in 2026. Although it may seem distant, the intricate planning and design work happening now are crucial to ensuring a seamless construction phase and successful project completion.
Behind every groundbreaking ceremony lies a story of months—sometimes years—of meticulous preparation. This advanced planning allows construction crews to capitalize on the summer months when campuses are less busy, minimizing disruption and ensuring students return to enhanced facilities each fall.
Our commitment to innovation and forward-thinking design ensures that every detail is meticulously accounted for, even those you may never see but are critical to the success of such projects. From state-of-the-art dining halls to wellness centers, academic buildings and student housing facilities, our designs are crafted with the future in mind.
Stay tuned for more updates on how we’re transforming higher education landscapes across the region.

Julia King, design practitioner and Policy Fellow at LSE Cities, is one of three judges you can get your project in front of by entering the AR Future projects awards 2024.
Trained as an architect, her research, design practice and teaching focus on infrastructure and public space in the context of youth engagement, inequitable infrastructure developments and urban micro-culture. She is the founder and director of both the Apprenticeship Programme in City Design and the Researcher-in-Residence scheme at LSE Cities, two novel outreach models for investigating and designing urban spaces with local young people.
When talking to Julia about the awards, we asked them to answer five questions…
1. Why should a practice consider entering The Architectural Review’s awards – and AR Future Projects in particular – over other industry awards?
2. What inspiration do you think 2024 entrants can take from 2023’s winning projects?
3. What are your thoughts on the overall winner, the Anthony Timberlands Center?
4. What is one of the most urgent issues facing cities today, that you think architects should be paying closer attention to?
5. Could you recommend one book to AR readers and ARFP entrants on the future of cities?

In my master's thesis at Nottingham Trent University, I tackled the daunting task of addressing global challenges by delving into two critical questions:
1. What if inequality and instability continue to grow?
2. What if the current capitalist system is replaced by a new societal order?
After extensive research, I honed in on the Innovation Hub as a potential typology, envisioning its development by 2030. One of the key functions I proposed for this futuristic hub involves the infusion of novel functionalities. This forward-thinking approach aims to usher in a paradigm shift in addressing the pressing issues of our time.
Function (Innovation Hub): Memory Tubes
A user-friendly digital platform where with interactive stations with touchscreens where visitors can browse through alumni memories, anecdotes, and advice sorted by industries, years, or themes. A dedicated website that can be operated on in this room.

#UrbanDesign on Campus Part 2: Coloring Outside the Lines
Cities and towns are significantly impacted by the colleges and universities within them (think: green space, culture, economy, workforce, and more). Driven by a variety of factors, intentional campus #design is essential for town and gown to thrive together and create inclusive prosperity for students, faculty, staff, employees, and residents.
In part two of this series by Principal and Global Planning Leader Yogesh Saoji, AIA, AICP, he describes the benefits of crossing the lines of campuses and communities: https://bit.ly/45IVV8b#HigherEducation#UrbanEducation#EducationDesign
