Creative collisions occur when academics and industry collide. The biggest names in #Cincinnati collaborated on a first-of-its kind clinical trial that elevates your neighborhood grocery store as a preventive health care destination. University of Cincinnati, UC Health, Cincinnati Children's and Kroger partnered to improve health outcomes through retail-based dietary innovation called SuperWin. “SuperWIN is the most scientifically rigorous study of a comprehensive health care intervention ever conducted with the retail industry,” Dylan L Steen M.D., M.S. a cardiologist at the UC College of Medicine. “Grocery purchasing data is progressively being linked to nutrition information and could be used by dietitians, nurses, pharmacists and physicians to provide individualized guidance to patients.” Community members were provided a Kroger loyalty card, met with a Kroger Health dietitian and provided medical nutrition therapy. They had access to Kroger Health’s nutrition rating system and Yummly for recipe recommendations and meal planning. “Retail dietitians have expertise in showing customers the best food products to manage different diseases,” said Sarah Couch from the department of rehabilitation, exercise and nutrition science in the UC College of Allied Health Sciences, who designed the dietary portion of SuperWIN. “If we, as a society, are going to extend the reach beyond hospitals and traditional medical settings, it becomes readily apparent this is the most promising path forward,” said Dr Steen.
