This year we gather for the #WEF24 Annual Meeting in Davos with an ever-growing need for building #cooperation and #trust. It is hard to keep optimism alive when there is fragmentation in so many of our systems. The world is at multiple inflection points with risks overlapping and compounding. And yet my optimism is fueled by so many examples of risk-takers tackling these challenges head-on. I am proud to be working on an initiative that is tackling global decarbonization for industries that have historically been so challenging to transform, including steel, aluminum, cement & concrete, shipping, aviation and trucking. Since its launch at COP26 in Glasgow, the #FirstMoversCoalition has achieved remarkable milestones, securing an aggregated demand of $16 billion for emerging climate technologies. Supported by 13 governments, representing over 50% of the global GDP, the coalition stands as a testament to the power of collective action. Their recent report sheds light on the critical role of #NationalSystemsofInnovation (NSI) in driving innovative technologies, providing a pathway for nations to combat the climate crisis and advance sustainable development.   Titled 'Good practices and lessons learned on the setup and implementation of National Systems of Innovation,' this report covers a wide spectrum of technologies, from alternative fuels to artificial intelligence, and from bioplastics to e-mobility. It underscores the importance of innovation in achieving long-term global responses to climate change and promoting economic growth, echoing the principles of the Paris Agreement.   This report echoes with CAFA's mission to foster climate action within associations. It emphasises how innovation can be a powerful tool for associations to contribute to global climate efforts while advancing their sustainability goals. This term not only refers to a vast sector that encompasses #solutions, #companies, and #services aimed at mitigating the impact of human activities on the #planet but also highlights a field that, over the last decade, has captured increasing interest, making up over 10% of global #venture capital and private #equity value, according to Nat Bullard, former Chief Content Officer at Bloomberg. 🔍 Understanding this theme and exploring how #technology can tackle the #challenges posed by climate change is crucial, especially in our current era. As part of #MENAClimateWeek 2023 on October 8-12, Rawad Choubassi, Partner and Managing Director at Systematica and Nihal Al Sabbagh, Founder and Director of Environas, will give a presentation entitled "Towards resilient active mobility infrastructures in hot cities." MENA Climate Week, which will bring together policymakers, industry experts, and civil society to exchange #climatesolutions ahead of #cop28, is backed by the UNDP, UN Environment Programme, UN Climate Change, and The World Bank. In hot cities, massive efforts are required to enhance the urban environment in an effort to promote #activemobility. However, it is challenging to change the environmental perception of #pedestrians and influence their behavior during heat waves. As a response to the #cop27 climate hub proposal integrating #climate, tourism, and #walkability pillars in outdoor spaces, Rawad and Nihal will demonstrate how #GIS applications, #computervision techniques, #digitaltools, simulations, and #machinelearning models can help develop the assessment methodology for micro-climatic factors, #thermalcomfort indices, and thermal-based pedestrian comfort path choice, using projects conducted in the MENA region and Milan, Italy as examples. It was great to have many of you join the Green Business Building Forum in London last week. Hereby an impression of the day, and I hope to see many climate tech start-ups and scale-ups at the upcoming events across Europe and the world. Some of the key takeaways from the event: 1) The sustainability imperative is an opportunity for growth. A lot of clean-tech markets are going to grow by 5 to 10x in the next few years, there is optimism in the market and huge value to be captured for both businesses and investors. 2) The hyperscaling formula to launch decacorns needs to be tailored to different technology archetypes and stages of maturity. We have a recipe for successful hyperscaling, but the answer is unique for every business. 3) Funding needs to be more targeted to enable technologies at different maturity levels to scale at a rapid pace and get the reductions in emissions we need. 4) The challenge is not easy, but we have a huge opportunity to join forces with all players across the ecosystem and understand and tackle those challenges together. #GBB2023
