Venture Capital is a world in which bets are placed on expected values to drive power law returns and create scalable innovation. Why are VCs now looking at nature and biodiversity? Because the loss of nature and biodiversity only goes so far. Eventually ecosystems collapse and economies collapse with them. New viable business models that truly incorporate nature and biodiversity will not appear overnight, but as the need for them becomes increasingly inevitable, the companies that provide solutions to this complex problem could be in line for power law returns. Australian Ethical is participating in Nature Action 100, a global investor-led initiative working to address the urgent crisis of nature and biodiversity loss around the world.   With more than half of the world’s GDP reliant on nature and its services, depleting natural capital creates significant operational, regulatory, litigation, and reputational risk for investors and businesses alike, and negative economic repercussions globally.     Among the 190 investor participants currently part of the initiative, we are one of the only Australian investors who have joined so far. This initiative comes at a critical time for engagement with Australia being the only developed country in the world identified by WWF as being a deforestation hotspot, and having one of the world’s worst track records for mammal extinctions. This is linked to rising global temperatures and extreme weather events which makes it difficult to sustain all life on earth. Therefore, climate change and biodiversity are very closely linked. 📈 Institutional investors play a key role in driving capital towards address both issues. This is about: - firstly, investing in strategies that are specifically aligned with these objectives (of which there are now plenty in the equity and credit space and markets are continuing to evolve rapidly). And - secondly, engaging with fund managers and underlying companies to understand how they are prioritising these aims, as well as their capabilities. ❗ As well as the impact on the environment and nature, investors need to recognise that these issues present financially material risks to their investment portfolios. But risk also presents potential upside investment opportunities. Regardless, it is crucial that investors understand the potential impacts on their investments and the options available to them in their specific circumstances. 🖽 Like the #TCFD, the #TNFD, provides a robust framework for investors to articulate and evaluate these risks and opportunities holistically across the whole portfolio. Climate investor Ocean 14 Capital secures £26m. 🌊 Large investments so far include €10m into both Brazil-based animal protein producer Tilabras and Norwegian seafood harvester gear maker Ava Ocean. Founding partner of Ocean 14 Capital, Chris Gorell Barnes, said: “We believe that the fund’s strategic investment in Ava Ocean is significant. 🌿 Excited to announce my first day at Lester Asset Management! Over the next four months, I will be contributing to the Lynx Global Biodiversity Fund, Canada’s first biodiversity initiative, focusing on its fourth theme: sustainable agriculture and food systems. This includes agrotechnology, agriscience, soil & crop management, food & beverage systems, and fishing & agriculture. The urgency of this initiative is undeniable: global biodiversity is declining at an alarming rate due to deforestation, wetland loss, land degradation, pollution, and climate change. Since 1970, human population has doubled, resulting in significant losses: 70% reduction in wetlands, 70% decline in animal populations, 50% decrease in forests and coral reefs, and 20% loss of total land area, resulting in over 1 million species currently at risk of extinction. The Lynx Global Biodiversity Fund aims to grow capital by investing in companies aligned with nature-positive goals, driving long-term change. Our focus is on investing in nature-based solutions to halt and reverse nature loss and land degradation while promoting sustainability and addressing critical issues like water and food security. I'm thrilled to embark on this journey alongside dedicated individuals like Stephen Takacsy and Matthew Kaszel, CFA. Our mission has received a massive boost! We are excited to announce the close of a £9 million series A fundraise, secured from major industry backers. We set out to unlock the value of soil carbon restoration, for soil health and climate mitigation. This funding will help us to build faster and further afield, bringing high-integrity primary data to soil carbon projects around the world. The investment – including two major FTSE 100 companies – is a significant endorsement of soil carbon removals as a scalable nature-based solution. For the many partners working alongside us in this sector, the news reinforces the importance and value of our ecosystem, and will be catalytic for growth. The round was led by Shell Ventures, who have deep expertise in nature-based solutions and soil carbon measurement.
