It was an honor to accompany The National Institutes of Health (#NIH) Office of Nutrition Research (#ONR) Director Dr. Andrew Bremer to the American Cancer Society and Research!America: Discovery. Innovation. Health. event welcoming Dr. Monica Bertagnolli as the 17th NIH Director on January 31st. This event was widely attended by NIH and institute, center, and office leadership and #biomedicalresearch advocates with remarks from Dr. Bertagnolli and several members of Congress. One of the remarks from Dr. Bertagnolli that I found particularly impactful was (paraphrased): "At NIH our job isn't simply to make scientific discoveries and then call it a day. (2022) Athletes face a significant risk of developing illnesses, particularly when they are in the final stages of preparation for competitions. These illnesses can range from common colds to more severe infections, and they can have a detrimental impact on both performance and training schedules. When an athlete falls sick, it often necessitates time off training, disrupts the carefully planned regimen, and can lead to subpar performance. Consequently, there is an ongoing pursuit to uncover preventative measures, such as optimising nutrition and strengthening the immune system to minimise the chances of athletes falling ill and ensure they remain in peak condition when it matters most. I'm excited to share that our research now published in the #JournalofDairyResearch. We explored the effects of shortening the dry period on milk production, metabolic health, and reproductive outcomes in high-yielding dairy cows. Our study found that: 1) Short dry periods, especially for cows with moderate body condition scores, positively influenced metabolic indicators and reproductive performance. 2) These cows showed less post-partum body condition loss and improved reproductive parameters, including fewer open days and services per conception. Conclusion: Reducing the dry period length offers potential benefits for cow health and farm productivity. 🔍 Discover more about our findings and their impact on dairy management.
