Recommendations: Passionate endorsements from teachers who can vouch for your curiosity and character speak volumes. 4. Consistent Theme: A cohesive application that ties your activities, aspirations, and academic interests together shows foresight and maturity. Chapter 30: Interpreting Changing Academic Roles and Identities in Higher Education Kerri-Lee Krause “The chapter explores some of the key factors shaping academic roles and identities, including national policies and international higher education trends, institutional missions, disciplinary, departmental and individual factors. It acknowledges that the lenses through which one interprets academic work significantly influence one’s view of academic roles, and the relationships between the somewhat contested and problematised tripartite configuration of research, teaching and service. Interpretations of learning and teaching in higher education have tended to rely heavily on psychological frameworks. However, there is growing recognition of the inherent value in examining the multi-dimensionality of academic work through a socio-cultural lens (e.g. see Fanghanel and Trowler, 2007), which accounts for the influences of history, politics and culture in shaping academe.”

In A Just Future, I underscore the fact that college faculty play an enormous role determining the academic success of historically marginalized students who may struggle at elite institutions. There are plenty of ways faculty have learned to improve their teaching, through inclusive pedagogy, for instance. But let's not overlook the valuable role of mentorship, a more fraught enterprise now that our increasingly diverse student body looks different than our faculty body. Opened up my LinkedIn and read the following bio description from the lead editor of our writing village Richard Williams 🥹💝 “Dr. Ball boasts a decade and a half of experience working with young students in Washington D.C. Her leadership style focuses on awareness and she employs positive educational methods for all students from early childhood to higher education, with a particular emphasis on supporting students of diverse backgrounds and those who speak multiple languages. Engaged in public discourse, she delves into the connection between anti-racism policies, academic research, and practical application in her talks and writings. Dr. Ball recently attained her doctoral degree in Educational Policy and Leadership and was honored with the 2022 American University Outstanding Scholarship at the Graduate Level Award. Currently, she holds the position of Assistant Principal in the district, teaches part-time at American University School of Education, and contributes articles to Philly’s 7th Ward. In her professional capacity, she challenges feelings of inadequacy, promotes overall well-being, and offers guidance on conscious leadership for fairness. In practice, students deserve to be prepared, feel a sense of peace, and protection of their whole selves.
