If you solicit for a SBIR, you need a plan for follow-on work. I’ve seen too many government organizations solicit with zero plan of what happens beyond the SBIR…no projected funding, no mechanism to turn into actual work. So you pay a company to build something for you only to say “sorry I have nothing for you after.” It’s totally fine to have a plan and not execute it - you may just not like the end result. Or you just have changing circumstances. But that’s a conscious choice made after seeing results, not being caught flat-footed because you didn’t plan well enough. It’s honestly disrespectful to the intended SBIR process and perpetuates an uncrossable “valley of death” for dual-use technology. Plan ahead. Project funding. Solicit away. SBIRs are critical to advance dual-use technology and propelling US competitive advantage forward in Defense. #planahead #contingency #valleyofdeath #SBIR #STTR

“The more things change the more they stay the same.” Significant parallels between #f35 integration and introduction of #CF18 Hornet 40 years ago. Op Ed beginning on page 54 of Skies Magazine RCAF issue. Beginning of CF-18 Hornet for #RCAF was #transformational leaping from 2nd Gen fighters to brand new 4th Gen Hornet. Now 40 years later, it’s the massive leap to #5thGen F-35. Transitioning young aviators early, learning from other air forces who have more depth and #knowledge and staying ahead of #capability curve have parallels in the CF-18 introduction and should be applied to F-35 transition. RCAF is so far behind now. Key now is to not make mistakes from this point forward.
