My Alma Mater, Michigan State University, recently announced Jonathan Smith as the new Football head coach. What intrigued me most about him is his slogan- “Low Ego, High Output.” My first thought was, that sounds like an agile team! 👏
On a high-performing agile team, teammates check their egos at the door, and work together to iteratively release products and features that deliver value to the customer.
But what about the difference between Output vs. Outcomes? In agile, Outputs are efforts that are quantifiable, for example:
🏈Points per game
🏈 Number of turnovers
🏈 Pass completion rate
Outputs are the first level of results, while Outcomes are benefits derived from outputs.
Outputs are measurable and can be seen immediately after implementing a program. Outcomes are more difficult to measure or validate and depend on how the output is perceived by stakeholders.
Coach Smith’s stakeholders include the players, parents, alumni, media, and the overall population of college football fans. He’ll face challenges with ever changing world of college football, with the transfer portal, NIL, and even pay for play in discussion.
As he mentioned, he’s ready to get to work. Here’s to building a strong program, Coach Smith! 🙌
