A group of former OpenAI employees are speaking out about a working culture that isn't prioritising safety: Jan Leike who led OpenAI's alignment team says that "safety culture and processes have taken a back seat to shiny products". We need to pay attention to who is building the products, and making the decisions, that will affect everything that comes next. https://lnkd.in/eKRWbuer

Perfect timing to repost this! I know I’ve shared a few posts recently asking how you plan to incorporate elements of AI into your leadership and business. Now, here’s the next question: how do you plan to incorporate methods that keep you, your business, employees and community safe from the potential harm AI can do? #technology #ai #artificialintelligence #safety #techsafety #leadership
Researcher, broadcaster, and author of Technology Is Not Neutral: A short guide to technology ethics (see harebrain.co). Television: BBC "Artificial Intelligence: Decoded". Radio: BBC World Service "Business Matters".
“A group of OpenAI insiders is blowing the whistle on what they say is a culture of recklessness and secrecy at the San Francisco artificial intelligence company, which is racing to build the most powerful A.I. systems ever created. The group, which includes nine current and former OpenAI employees, has rallied in recent days around shared concerns that the company has not done enough to prevent its A.I. systems from becoming dangerous… They also claim that OpenAI has used hardball tactics to prevent workers from voicing their concerns about the technology, including restrictive nondisparagement agreements that departing employees were asked to sign. The group published an open letter on Tuesday calling for leading A.I. companies, including OpenAI, to establish greater transparency and more protections for whistle-blowers.”https://lnkd.in/ecQMGrTE

BREAKING: Sam Altman is back as OpenAI CEO! But the drama is far from over. Here's what happened: • OpenAI just made an announcement that they have reached “an agreement in principle for Sam Altman to return to OpenAI as CEO.“ • The company also announced that there’s a new “initial board” of Larry Summers, Adam D'Angelo and Bret Taylor as Chair. • But the drama is far from over as details are still being sorted out. • Journalist Kara Swisher reported that there were tensions between board member Helen Toner and Sam Altman and some in the company wanted her off the board in the weeks prior. • Emily Chang from Bloomberg reported that Sam Altman wanted to be on the board and wanted Adam D’Angelo to step down. But for now, Altman stays off the board and D’Angelo stays on. But things seem far from done and dusted. There are reported tensions between Altman and D’Angelo. And it’s not certain what the final shape of the board will look like, as more members may be added.

Good interview with OpenAI CTO, Mira Murati. A lot was covered in just 10 minutes. Kudos to WSJ’s Joanna Stern. 👏 1. Imperfections: Funny but understand, given the early stages. 2. Data: Built on publicly available (YouTube, Google, Facebook, Instagram?) and licensed data from Shutterstock? The seemingly awkward response to these questions during the 4th minute, I suspect, is likely to go viral and will need some damage control. 3. Red Teaming: I'm curious to understand the depth of this exercise, given tools such as these will pave a new order of things to come and have a profound impact on society as a whole. The need for sufficient guardrails will be at loggerheads with the need to provide the flexibility to be creative, especially the extent to which it should be permissible, e.g., nudity. To start with, the need to watermark and identify real vs sora seems obvious. 4. Timing of release to the public: Rightful consideration to the upcoming election in the US, in view of misinformation and harmful bias, but then elections are just one of the many considerations. 5. Impact on the filmmaking industry: I suspect we will increasingly feel like living in a simulation. 😊 #openai #sora #data #public #licensed #redteaming #misinformation #harmfulbias #privacy #security #watermark #filmmaking #wallstreetjournal

This is what happens when management loses its accountability. Whatever the internal issues at OpenAI, the optics look terrible. Poor messaging of a departure that backfires spectacularly and throws into open question the content of the Board's message, the disconnect with employees and investors, and the lack of good governance can be extremely damaging and very difficult to course correct. Many lessons here.
