In #Thailand, depleting natural gas reserves have increased the share and cost of fuel imports, presenting a growing need for the country – where the fuel accounts for close to two-thirds of electricity generation. To address this, the country is enhancing #renewables usage and exploring technologies including bioenergy, carbon capture and green hydrogen. The government also has plans for battery storage for solar energy - which has very high potential given Thailand’s sun exposure - and fuel cell-driven power plants.💡 Many of these efforts are driven by collaboration with MHI, building on Mitsubishi Power’s longstanding support of the country. Can Malaysia's bold energy transition roadmap pave the way for a greener future? Malaysia's Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, has unveiled the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), pledging to shift the country away from #fossilfuels. The plan includes $430 million in government funding for #energytransition projects, a #renewableenergy exchange for cross-border trade, and aims to create jobs and boost investments in #cleanenergy, with a target of achieving 70% renewable energy by 2050. A rapid expansion in the deployment of renewable energy in the past year has brought the world close to achieving the target of tripling global capacity by 2030. This significant progress was driven in large part by the big push into solar and wind power by China, which contributed to a 50% surge in capacity. Noteworthy increases in Europe, the United States, and Brazil have been recorded, but China's acceleration is particularly outstanding. It signals a significant milestone in the country’s environmental development journey.   More important than the peak, though, is what happens next. This remarkable progress offers an opportunity for governments across the world to fulfil the pledge made at COP28 last November: tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030 and reducing global reliance on fossil fuels. Great to see this aggressive commitment by the G7. It is important to realize that most long duration technologies are early stage. The industry needs to see some big funding for FOAK systems. Open funding opportunities that do prescribe a certain niche but that invite companies to pitch the roles they see themselves fit to play. We need these to be vetted but we shouldn’t have to wait until the grant round comes along that asks the exact right question.

That pace of growth would see global capacity accelerating 2.5x by 2030 from current levels. The target of 11,000 gigawatts by 2030 is now within reaching distance. This rapid progress boosts global climate change efforts and helps China reduce its reliance on coal. In a pledge made a few years ago, China aimed to install 1,200 gigawatts (GW) of wind and solar capacity by 2030. A forecast by Climate Energy Finance (CEF), a Sydney-based think tank, suggests China could meet this goal within weeks. As of May 2024, China had already installed over 1,150GW, with installations typically increasing in the second half of the year. The solar sector has seen remarkable growth, adding 217GW in 2023 and an additional 79.2GW in the first five months of this year.
