Europe is pushing for a stronger semiconductor sector. Research labs in Europe will receive €2.5 billion in funding under the European Chips Act to host a pilot line to develop and test new components, including sub-2 nanometre chips. This includes approximately €1.4 billion in grants from European Union (EU)-funded programs, and an additional €1.1 billion from private companies, including ASML. The pilot project intends to offer Europe’s industries and startups access to chip manufacturing technology that would otherwise be too costly for any single entity to test or develop independently. imec, a world-leading hub in nanoelectronics and digital technologies, is one of the main research labs that will host and lead the project. Other participating research labs include CEA-Leti of France, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft of Germany, VTT of Finland, CSSNT of Romania, and the Tyndall National Institute of Ireland. Overall, the €43 billion European Chips Act aims to double the EU’s global market share in semiconductors from 10% to at least 20% by 2030. → Deepsense is a network of specialist science & tech advisors enhancing how decision-makers approach critical technical assessments.
