Joy’s groundbreaking work addresses biases in AI systems, ensuring that technology serves everyone fairly and equitably. Her efforts are critical in our digital age, where technology has the power to shape our lives and societies. Just as Juneteenth symbolizes freedom and hope, the Algorithmic Justice League stands as a beacon for fairness in technology. Communities of color face a disproportionate burden of poor health outcomes due to limited access to healthcare, deep-rooted mistrust stemming from a history of discrimination within the medical field, and other systemic issues. What’s more, POC are often underrepresented in clinical trials and research studies.    Tranquil Clinical Research , a company that recognizes this historical disparity, is actively taking steps to address the gap. Recently, the Houston-based research clinic secured a $500,000 working loan through the Abbott-LISC Initiative to Support Diverse Businesses in Health. For decades, Miami Dade College Dade College has served as an exemplar of changemaking practice and culture in our community. In both recognizable and subtle ways, our faculty and staff have incorporated what it means to commit to changemaker education through the ways that we teach and learn with our students.     It is exciting that next week we level-up that commitment with the launching of our inaugural Changemaker Week! For 7 straight days (Sept.18-24), across all 8 of our campuses, we are hosting over 80 events and opportunities that will engage students, faculty, staff, and our community in both dialogue and practice about changemaking. We want our students to not only stand-out in their professional journeys but to also show-up as engaged citizens in their communities – individuals who act with empathy, practice reflection, lean into resiliency, and jump into action for the well-being of all.    In a rapidly-changing world, where new technologies are constantly leading us into new spaces, possibilities, and even dilemmas, we must remember that we remain in the driver's seat of progress.
