This week, we’re celebrating #BeNiceToNewJerseyWeek, which began in 1985 as a way to embrace the positives of the Garden State. Each day, we give you reasons why New Jersey is #1 in our books. According to NJ.gov, New Jersey is among the leaders in many forms of agricultural production. New Jersey ranks: 5th in blueberry production, 3rd in cranberry production, 3rd in spinach, 3rd in bell peppers, and 4th in peach production. Our state also produces an abundance of tomatoes, corn, apples, strawberries, potatoes, hay, soybeans and nursery stock.

This is a potato; a handful of it costs about $2. Take those same potatoes, slice them thin, and fry them. Suddenly, those $2 potatoes are now worth $4 as a plate of potato chips. You can boil these potatoes, mash them up, and season them into mashed potatoes. Now, those $2 potatoes have transformed into a $6 side dish. Do you also know that you can turn those potatoes into vodka? Distill and bottle them up, and now those same $2 potatoes are worth $50 or more as a premium bottle of potato vodka. Moral lessons? 🔺: In agriculture, don't think production alone, think value addition. 🔺: Value addition increases the worth of agricultural products and increases income.

I can't wait to grow some purple tomatoes in my garden -- with twice the amount of antioxidants (anthocyanins) found in blueberries! The July 2021 issue of the NYT Magazine article, "Learning to Love GMOs" is an informative read for anyone interested leveraging the power of science to create a more diverse array of fruits and vegetables that have broader taste appeal: https://lnkd.in/gDH63ctG ...favorite quote in article about reducing fear over GMOs, "almost everything we grow and eat today has had its DNA altered extensively. For millenniums, farmers, discovering that one version of a plant — usually a random genetic mutant — was hardier, or sweeter, or had smaller seeds, would cross it with another that, say, produced more fruit, in hopes of getting both benefits. But the process was slow." What are your thoughts on GMOs or amazing CRISPR technology to improve the nutritional value of fresh foods?

Great quality, but low pricing on California mature green tomatoes California harvest of mature green tomatoes is currently centered in the Coachella Valley, the very southern part of the state. The desert season started on May 10 and will finish next week, by June 14 or 15. Up until California's season started, the market was strong. "In the three months leading up to the California season, the market was around $20," says Todd Giardina with family owned DiMare Company. "However, as soon as we started, there was a flush of field-grown Rounds from everywhere and the market dropped to $10." Prices have been low since then. #grow🌱 #agriculture #supplychain #trade #usa🇺🇸 #markets #commodities #tomatoes🍅 #stagflation #california☀️ #demand #volume #freight #coachella
