What a great movement by students. Being a First-Gen Student is scary, intimidating, and leaves a lot of room for uncertainty. Thoughts of "Am I doing this right?" or "Do I even belong here with these smart people?" echo daily throughout ones collegiate experience. I hope that state legislators and policy makers are not just moved by the stories of the student advocates...but are also moved to action because of the student advocates! #FirstGenProud #LearningForEveryone #AccessToHigherEducation #FirstGen #RemoveBarriers
Shout out to students from #FirstScholarsNetwork institutions Washburn University, Kansas State University, and the University of Kansas. Today, they'll host the inaugural State of Kansas F1rst-Generation College Student Advocacy Day! Led by students, for students, the goals include advocating for policies supporting #firstgen and driving actionable steps to enhance educational opportunities.

🌟 OCJ's inaugural policy cohort, composed of most community organizations that received 2022 grant funding, took flight this past year.🌟 During this time, we have collaborated hand-in-hand with cohort members, navigating the policy and advocacy space in Oregon. This summer, we hit pause to reflect on our shared journey and map out our collective path forward in championing Oregon consumers. 🤝 🌐 Speed of Trust: We believe in slowing down to move forward with trust. By prioritizing community, listening, and exploring how consumer issues affect Oregonians, we're building a foundation for long-term change. 🤲🤝 The Power of Together: Our policy cohort shared invaluable insights, hailing the cohort experience for its nurturing learning environment, advocacy support, and relationship building. 🌟📚 Their words underscore the power of collaborative efforts. #OCJ #PolicyCohort

After decades of expert-driven, top-down education advocacy, a more grassroots approach to change is resurgent. Growing numbers of advocates are taking a community organizing approach to their campaign, and getting results. In our latest Advocacy Labs report, a joint venture with 50CAN, we offer a lens on the rich history of community organizing over the last century, from labor to faith-based to civil rights to the approach made famous by Saul Alinsky in Chicago. Researched and written by Marc Porter Magee, a sociologist and executive director of 50CAN, this report bridges robust research with actionable advice for applying an organizer’s mindset to advocacy campaigns. Higher Education folks: What conferences does Student Basic Needs Coalition need to attend in 2024? One of my goals for this year is to expand our impact and exposure by attending at least 4 conferences and speaking at 2 of those. I’d love any suggestions on the most impactful conferences in higher education, student success, hunger relief, or advocacy. #highereducation #studentaffairs #studentsuccess #nonprofitleadership
