Vice President, Full Professor, Keynote and Public Speaker, Author of Blackwildgirl. Founder of the Faculty Women of Color in the Academy National Conference, and the Black College Institute
I am starting my ACE Fellowship bootcamp tomorrow. Before descending into non-stop conversation about leadership and higher education with amazing leaders and scholars from across the country, I needed to find a little respite. I headed across the street to the Minnesota Wildife Refuge. Unexpectedly, I walked upon a lending library... Today, I re-read The Three Little Pigs and in my metaphorical imagination, I see the wolf as representing anti-DEI movement: the energy of antagonism, anger, frustration, and hate. It is persistent and non-yielding. It files lawsuits against universities, enacts legislation eliminating DEI offices and budgets, threatens faculty and students on social media, and creates unwelcoming environments, promoting the antithesis of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. Those of us who are social justice activists, advocates, and allies have to fight this wolf, his huffing and puffing, and threats to blow down the diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice houses we have worked so hard to build. Yet, some of our social justice houses are made of straw, some sticks, and others bricks. But we all must be vigilant, and think of creative strategies to thwart this energy. We need a stronger counter-movement and counter-energy. We gotta be like that third little pig and outsmart, outmaneuver. I have two takeaways: Understand the “wolf” of oppression and hate and develop an underground railroad strategy. And, some books should not be read to children at all, and especially not at night. #bookbans #newblogpost #childrensbooks #lendinglibraries

“While the work of advancing educational equity is broad and varied, our experiences together share two key commonalities: First, these efforts are successful when they are supported by both youth and adults. Second, they are most successful when they are supported by the schools themselves, through resources, funding, time and access to opportunities.”- Powerful piece written by my UP youth and adult colleagues!

I build async learning programs for nonprofits 🎓 college access & success | workforce development | career-connected learning
How did we make this college success program NOT feel like yet another course? We tapped program alums, now young professionals in the field, to share their post-program journeys. Scholars felt seen, supported, and inspired for the road ahead. When you're developing a course at your organization, how do you bring your community into the process?

Librarians are critical to the success of every child. To eliminate their positions in any school is a disservice to the integrity of education. Stories are key to learning and who better to help tell those stories than librarians? #keeplibrariansinschools #fundlibrarians #keepthestoriesalive

This week in the Library. Heather Bothe is working with the third grade reading Abe Lincoln Crosses a Creek. A story about how a friend of Abe Lincoln saves him from drowning in a creek: in the story, which is historical fiction, they explore what would have happened to our country had his friend not had the courage to save him. She also covers primary and secondary resources in literature and the press, reviewing how to think about news and finding ways to research content validity. The fifth graders are in the middle of the stock market game, where small teams compete with other teams from around the state. This week, they'll cover dividends as many companies report quarterly earnings. Heather has had the top three teams in the years they’ve participated, and she currently has the number one team in the state. The decision to eliminate librarians in Spring Branch ISD questions the value we place on freedom of expression and the exploration of diverse ideas and undermines the role of imagination and curiosity in developing informed curious minds. Librarians like Heather, who have transformed libraries into vibrant centers of learning and creativity, exemplify the true essence of what it means to be an educator in our times. Their work goes beyond mere management of books; they are instrumental in integrating technology with reading, enriching the educational experience for students and the community. Removing librarians signals a troubling message about our priorities and the value we assign to cultivating free thought and innovative thinking—indispensable qualities in today's rapidly evolving world. I urge our board and community to reconsider this decision. Let's keep the potential of our young minds open by not limiting their access to such vital resources. Instead, let's reaffirm our commitment to nurturing a future where every child can freely explore, dream, and think. Additionally, as SBISD deliberates renaming the Klussman Education Center, we must navigate differences of opinion with grace, understanding, and respect. Our decisions and actions reflect our community's values and principles. Let's ensure that our legacy is one of unity, respect for diverse viewpoints, and a steadfast belief in the power of every child's imagination. #KeepTheStoryAlive #FullyFundTexasSchools #LibrariansMatter #FreedomOfExpression #FutureLeaders

The power of collaboration... At The Spark Movement we're passionate about co-creating new ideas to reinvent the world for children and young people. Many of us feel that our current systems aren't fit for purpose, yet we can also feel like 'outliers' in our call for something new - it's isolating being at the forefront of the unknown. That's why we created the Spark Seeds Network - a space for conscious, heart-centred educators and parents who are calling not just for new ways of working, but new ways of thinking, being and relating. In our network meeting last night we were joined by UpliftKids.org, a fantastic organisation that's offering something brand new (and really needed) to parents and families - a curriculum of self-discovery, blending science and spirituality to help families find their inner compass. Jon and Amanda shared so many great insights and our discussion was so rich, such as: ⚡ The importance of the shift from having an external sense of authority and giving away our power, to having an internal sense of authority and finding our 'inner compass' 💖 ⚡Balancing the impact of tech and social media for kids 💻 by helping them to come back to their body, being aware of their bodily sensations and emotions ⚡The importance of raising children in community 🌍 and creating our own communities in lieu of what was once found in our neighbourhood or within our extended families ⚡Giving children 'joy snacks' 🙌 - finding little moments of joy throughout the day ⚡Exploring emotions with children, using the analogy of emotions as weather 🌦 which comes and goes and is ever-changing, stepping into the role of observer of our feelings, instead of letting feelings own us Check out https://upliftkids.org to learn more 💡 and join us for our next Network meeting on Monday 20th May ➡ https://lnkd.in/eesUuXGq

A plea to all in the education and human services fields: please watch or listen to this video as an introduction to the nonprofit organization Heterodox Academy. The word is spreading about the value of viewpoint diversity, intellectual humility, and open inquiry. Consider what you can do to reach across partisan divides, answer vitriole and fearmongering with kindness and truth-seeking, and make space for the respectful disagreement and civil dialogue that drive meaningful innovation and healthy development of young minds.
