Living in Amsterdam, owning a bike isn't unique, but my Brompton is something special. 🚴♂️ I’ve not owned a car yet, and recently got myself the Brompton bike. Arguably an urban adventure, while many of my peers opt for comfy BMWs at this life stage. 🚘 Let’s see if I make up my mind about owning a car anytime soon.. What makes my Brompton bike special to me.. ❤️ 1) I love that it’s a FOLDING BIKE It folds into a tiny little thing in 10 seconds, making urban commuting fun. And we don’t have to worry about it being stolen which is quite common in Amsterdam - On dinners out my husband I just take our Bromptons with us to restaurants & place them under the table or near coat check. 2) Each bike is HAND BUILT It feels so great to be supporting craftsmanship in this day & age where almost everything is mass produced. I was apprehensive when the guy at the store was ‘finishing’ my bike in front of me but it’s turned out very robust and it was a pleasure to see his passion for engineering. 3) Brompton Bicycle is a STORY OF VISION, innovation & resilience It didn’t start with a bicycle designer, it began with a young engineer, Andrew Ritchie, who believed there had to be a better way to move around the city—one that puts health, happiness and freedom at the forefront. Birds ride bikes! It’s springtime, and at IS IT A BIRD, this includes, among many other things, the bi-annual preparation of our preferred mode of transportation: the bike! 🚲 The bike is an effective, predictable mode of transportation.  One of the perks of living and working in a city like Copenhagen is the ability to commute by bike. It is our firm belief, that Copenhageners are not more idealistic than people at large. The bike just simply is the most efficient means of transportation on most occasions in our city. The infrastructure plays an important part in explaining this, the acceptable distances another, the bike is the most predictable mode of transportation in terms of times spent commuting, and finally, the social norms put the choice of the bike on the radar. All factors contribute to making the bike an easy everyday choice for a big part of the city's citizens in general, and employees at IS IT A BIRD, not the least. At IS IT A BIRD, workplace mobility politics hardly define the everyday choice of transportation among employees, yet it still makes sense for us to make the bike ride even more pleasant in the months to come before we have our second bi-annual repair when autumn arrives... Spring is almost here, which means it’s time for warm(er) weather bikers to start pedaling again. My preference is to use my bike and/or the Northstar train. I live two miles from Fridley Station so depending on weather, timing, or just how I'm feeling, I often bike to the station and board the train with my bike. Sometimes I'm interested in a longer ride and will bike down through Columbia Heights and Northeast Minneapolis. The River Road north of St. Anthony Boulevard is a great bike path in the north metro. Why do you choose to commute that way? My wife and I live an active lifestyle that includes a lot of outdoor activities like running, hiking, and biking. So, having an active commute helps me feel like I'm living out my values and being authentic to who I want to be. I also believe we need public transportation to survive. The 'suburban experiment' has shown us that a car-dependent culture comes with a huge number of trade-offs that are expensive and detrimental to an equitable region. The more options we can provide for people to travel by public transit, the better off everyone will be. What do you enjoy most about your commute? Riding along the river is really great way to start or end my day. On the train, getting to relax and decompress is wonderful. I can play some games on my phone and not think about anything while the train whisks me to where I need to go.

Bolt co-founder Martin Villig 🇪🇪 used to drive to work but in 2018, he ditched his car keys in favour of pedal power. 🚲 Martin’s commute is 3km long and takes him around 12 minutes by bike. During the day, he often also cycles between offices to various meetings and ends up cycling for 30-50 minutes (between 7-10km). ��Sometimes the car is a faster way to travel than a bike, but travelling by car can sometimes be three times slower due to congestion. This makes commuting times difficult to predict. With the bike, my commuting time is the same every day, so I always know exactly when to leave.” As well as a consistent commute time, cycling has freed Martin from his least favourite things about driving: finding a parking spot and sitting in traffic. “Now that I’m cycling, I’m getting more fresh air and some mild exercise between meetings. The time I spend cycling gives me a chance to think, and I find that it makes me more productive. When you’re in a car, you move much less, which can impact your long-term health.” And if Martin ever wants to stop along the way, there’s no trouble finding a parking spot. The most common response when I ask individuals if they could cycle to work is “I would but…” 🚙 I’m scared of the cars 👧 I have to pick up my children from daycare or school 🥵 I don’t like being sweaty for work 🚴 I can’t ride a bike or I don’t have a bike 🤷♀️ It’s easier to drive I can honestly say I have felt all of these barriers apart from picking up children but completely understand how this can be logistically difficult. When we moved to Nelson I really wanted to be central so cycling was my only transport for getting to and from work. Even walking when I have a good podcast I’d like to listen to or its a great time to call a friend or family member. I guess what I’m trying to say is consider your options if you can’t cycle what can you do? Can you walk or run? What about the bus or train? Start with one day a week and build up from there. At Bluemoth we have been competitively taking part in the Aotearoa Bike Challenge with a team of two. David and I have been riding absolutely everywhere, no excuses. All of the riding has paid off as we are sitting 1st in Nelson & Tasman (1-6 Staff) 2nd for “Consultancy” in New Zealand and 19th overall (1-6 Staff). The cycle challenge brings people together and gets more people out riding. Who doesn’t love a bit of competition? Chia Sisters are keeping us on our toes as they’re just a few points behind us. Between David and I we have cycled 773km from the 1st February 24 to date. It’s not too late to sign up, you can cycle as an individual or get your organisation onboard. Road transport is New Zealand’s second largest greenhouse gas emitter due to traffic growth and it’s one of the easiest changes we can make in our everyday lives to reduce our impact on the environment. 📸 Nelson has awesome bike parking options.
