Design managers are being forced to take Individual Contributor (non-management) roles due to 'flattening' happening across the tech industry! On the other end of the spectrum some design managers are realizing they love the craft more and want to switch back to their IC design roots. How does one make the transition from being a Design Manager to an IC designer? Is it just a question of being on top of your Figma design skills? To get answers I reached out to Maheen Sohail who recently by choice transitioned from a Design Manager to Senior Designer role at Meta. Talking to her I gained amazing new perspectives: 1. Design Managers make great ICs because now they understand what their leadership expects from them. 2. As a Design Manager if you are afraid of losing touch with your Figma design skills, work on a few creative projects outside of work that challenge your design skills. 3. Switching from a Design Manager to IC designer is not an irreversible process! It's ok to switch back and forth. Information architecture and content strategy are critical and oft-neglected skills of UX designers, whether it be for web or product. You need to have the taxonomy which aligns with the market’s mental model to talk about the product features to internal and external stakeholders. You need to organize the product or reorganize the existing product to optimize the experience and get people to value quickly. You need to be able to document exactly how the product works and to foresee questions people will have with your product. Which brings me to the next invaluble skill - onboarding. You need this to get people to value quickly and get them unstuck quickly, which improves conversion and stickiness. Which brings me to self-service… everything is intertwingled… so, in the words of Mark Twain, take your pick, you can’t go amiss.
What are top three skills for new designers to perfect? - Strategic Thinking: Do you understand the long-tail implications of your designs? Are you capable of creating artefacts that go beyond the surface and shine a light on hidden and underlying challenges? - Technical Acumen: Do you understand how digital products are built and distributed? Do you understand the low-level technologies that allow a given digital product to deliver its value? Do you understand the constraints and limitations of your technology stack? - Visual Skills: Can you produce generally appealing designs that are aesthetically pleasing and that promote trust? What level should we hire a Founding Product Designer? In my experience, I've seen a higher rate of success when the company commits to hiring a Snr (and beyond) Level Designer. That Seniority of experience brings expertise primarily in the form of speed. They are faster, they know the way through (because they've navigated failures already) and they are able to get Your Product to market and to Customers faster and more effectively than a less experienced Designer. When growing and scaling is key to your businesses success, it's a huge value add to bring in the experience levels you need. It'll be far more worth it - I've seen it, many times! #designhiring #foundingdesigner

This week I delved into the qualities that are crucial when hiring product designers with a leader in the design space. 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀: 💡 Seek designers who are on a steep growth trajectory. Look for individuals who have gone from zero to stellar design skills in a short time. Their enthusiasm and dedication to improving rapidly are key indicators. 💡Don't solely judge applicants by their design portfolio. Instead, focus on their passion for design and their eagerness to learn and adapt. 💡During interviews, probe their opinions on the influence of technology on the design profession. Their insights into how tech intersects with design can reveal their depth of understanding. 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀: 💡When assessing senior candidates, their work should consistently exhibit a high level of quality. Technical proficiency becomes less of a concern at this stage. 💡Look beyond the 9-5 job. Examine their involvement in the design community. Are they actively participating, sharing knowledge, or mentoring others? Genuine interest in the field is a powerful indicator. 💡Inquire about their views on current design trends and the importance of human-centered design in the industry. Senior leaders should have insightful perspectives to share. Hiring top product designers is tough. Finding individuals who possess the right skills but also demonstrate a commitment to continuous growth and a passion for the field will help to build stronger, more innovative design teams Feel free to share your experiences and tips when hiring in the product design area 🙂

You would never get your architect to design half your house and then design the other half yourself because "you've been in a house". There's technical knowledge, design expertise, and professional standards they are working within. Hiring an event professional is like hiring an architect for your event. If you cut out parts of the scope to manage it yourself because you "know what events entail", you're missing out on having their technical knowledge, experience, and design expertise applied to your whole event. It's the difference between having "hired help" who can check off tasks for you versus having a trusted advisor that can help design an impactful experience for your attendees. I don’t know about you, but I’d never move into a house that was only half designed by a professional architect…. #events #eventprofs #eventdesign

A long overdue post, but recently I walked out of the office for the last time - forever! And, no, it wasn’t by security…. Although it was hard to leave the great friends and partners, it certainly wasn't hard to leave the machine. It’s been a long and winding creative road. Beginning my design career as an art director in Tokyo; then working at various design agencies and global consultancies; running my own retail design agency (Thanks, Tim!); to finally serving as a design leader at AT&T. And, along the way I’ve taught at many academic institutions and organizations. And now I’m done…kinda! Not quite ready to call it retirement, but no more need or desire to work full time. So what’s next? Well, my grand-daughter thinks it's drinking beer and watching football (Go Dawgs!). Probably, but I’ll also continue with teaching and mentoring new design talent. Mainly I plan on taking a break and catching up… at least for a little bit. So, if I haven’t seen or talked to you in awhile, let’s get together. I got nothing else to do…. There are also a couple of things that I’m interested in. I want to leverage my Japanese language and experience. Build upon my academic and teaching experience.
