Yesterday I had the opportunity to participate in an exciting panel discussion at the 🇭🇺 Budapest Marketplace Meetup 🇭🇺, an event organized with the collaboration of Munch, Piton Capital, and Fiedler Capital.
It was great to exchange thoughts with Akos Tajta from Wolt, and to delve into our journeys of scaling foodora and Wolt, respectively.
Here are some of my key takeaways from the discussion:
🌱 1. Balance Marketing & Sales and Operations:
🟢 Growth isn't just about marketing and sales. Operational excellence plays a crucial role in maximizing growth potential.
🟢 Let's not forget that besides acquiring new customers, you also need to keep them and get them order more frequently - for which great CX is essential.
🟢 As we learned in other panel discussions, this is especially getting important now with higher interest rates and fewer funding opportunities, not to mention that marketplaces can also benefit from higher revenue multiples in funding rounds.
⚙️ 2. To achieve this balance, and with that quick growth, you need to have the right BASICS:
🟢 You need the right team - people who can adapt and thrive amidst rapid growth. This is probably the most important piece.
🟢 You need streamlined, mostly automated processes.
🟢 You need a scalable tech stack and tools that evolve with your business needs.
📚 Apart from these, we shared numerous practical tips with the audience, recalled some funny stories from the times we competed with each other as well as had a great debate about brand marketing :)

Great session on #globalexpansion with Tony Honkanen from Wolt
A few key takeaways:
1️⃣ Talk to normal people, not just consultants when doing market discovery
2️⃣ Avoid "market analysis paralysis" by having a clear market evaluation framework
3️⃣ Activate functional roles to help with market discovery/expansion execution
4️⃣ Don't underestimate the "boring complexities"

We often talk about building beautiful products, the Wolt way. But what does that really mean? 🤔
On our journey towards delivery of (almost) everything, we’re building a suite of products — from the systems powering our own Wolt Market stores, to our support tooling, and even fintech solutions. 💡 And today our product organization, also known as Product+ at Wolt, is already over 700 people strong.
As we work in over 60 autonomous, independent product teams today, we thought it was time to build our own Product+ Playbook. It’s a guide to keep us aligned on all the important topics, ranging from how we work together as distributed teams to how we treat each other 💙
Read on to learn how we build products, the Wolt way 👇
Hey people! I hope your 2024 has started well and there is a lot of interesting stuff in the plans for this year.
To provide you some insight and/or inspiration, please have a read on our latest 2 blog posts. We are aiming to tell you a bit more of what happens in Wolt from QA point of view and how we have been able to scale up our quality along with our development org (which is 4x bigger than when I started at Wolt).
"How do we do Quality Assistance in Wolt" is how we built our expectations and vision of how QA in Wolt works. "How we do Quality Assistance in practice, the Wolt way" demonstrates a couple of tools from our toolbox on how to make the magic happen in day-do-day.
Please find the links from comments. As always feedback is a gift and who does not like gifts!? ;)

Today marks my fifth Woltaversary and geez what a ride it has been. To sum up the highlights is no easy feat, yet here goes:
2019 - I was hired to do two things. One - handle the reactive comms situations that come from being a platform on which real humans order real things to be delivered by real humans. This was a huge difference from the games industry, where yes, real humans are customers, but the product and offering is 100% digital, and “live operations” has a very different meaning. Two - handle the bigger international announcements for partnerships and finance rounds that come with being a high-growth international scale-up.
2020 - I started building a team, as it turns out supporting a business that is doubling or tripling in size means a lot of PR and comms work. Jani Hellström was my first hire and it has been amazing to build our function together. Covid19 also happened and we found ourselves making “no contact delivery” happen overnight - educating millions of customers, hundreds of thousands of couriers and merchants to completely change the way food delivery is done, while replying to hundreds of media enquiries. Safety was the #1 priority and I’m incredibly proud of our team for successfully navigating the years of lockdowns and restrictions. We also launched Wolt Market, which was a foundational step into everything beyond the restaurant.
2021 - A big year for my family and the company. Our youngest daughter was born in June, and in November we announced that DoorDash + Wolt are joining forces. I couldn’t resist the temptation to work on one of Europe’s biggest acquisitions ever, and found a way to make work and life, well, work. It’s been an absolute pleasure working alongside the fantastic DoorDash team, and I continue to learn more every day.
2022 - We continued to grow the team as Wolt also grew in scale and complexity - we have a broad range of bespoke technologies and products for a range of audiences - which also means comms work is a lot more than reacting to situations and pushing a few bigger things out. Understanding how to be a strategic partner for the broader business was a key thing in 2022, and we continue to build our team.
2023 - We added 10 people to our comms team and it's been amazing to see people step up and take ownership to grow our impact. Last year I figured out that learning and growing indeed never stops, and it is a very humbling experience. You reach one mountain peak only to discover the next one, and you start climbing again.
2024 - Today, as it snows yet again in Finland, I find myself grateful to be a part of this amazing journey, and I continue to be eager to learn and grow with whatever comes next. 🚀
From 400 to 10,000 and from 1 to 25 - the growth of the Wolt team and our mighty comms team in the past 5 years has been a whirlwind. It is a pleasure to work with each and every one on the team (names in comments) thank you!
Lastly, and most importantly, let’s raise a toast!
In many cultures, Easter is a time of reflection and tranquility. However, as we remain open 365 days a year and have active deliveries around the clock, it might not be a tranquil easter for us at Wolt, but here are some reflections.
At Wolt, our dear ol’ (/young, sry Miki!) founder and CEO of Doordash International, Miki Kuusi, has always preached, “It’s a marathon, not a sprint,” and I think the team in Sweden has exemplified this over the last few years, and are now seeing the results.
By staying patient, humble, focused, and prioritizing the right actions, at the right time, the team has created a foundation for growth that will take the business far in SWE over the years to come.
Reflecting on the team's accomplishments in Q1, it becomes apparent how well and fast the team has executed in the past months. But it also becomes apparent that the lion's share of the work has happened in the background, over the past year, and is invisible to everyone outside of our windows - so thank you, teams; Q1 is not only the result of your excellent execution, but also all the countless hours and the hard work that you've put in, over the past quarters, and years! 💙
To highlight a few accomplishments in the past quarter.
1. We started the year by launching the most extensive campaign we’ve ever had globally and locally in our different markets. The campaign focused on Wolt+, our subscription program that gives users free deliveries and other perks. As of this week, I’m also happy to share that we’ve expanded the program in Sweden to cover even more perks, longer free deliveries, and much more. Below, you can see one of the ad examples from the campaign created by Harry Kakoullis and the team - we can't wait to share what they have been cooking up for the rest of the year! 🍲
2. By taking a step back in the past year and focusing on the foundation, the teams have expanded into more than six major Swedish Cities within Q1, and an additional 1 250,000 Swedes can now enjoy Wolts Services. For companies like Wolt, expansion into new cities often needs a lot of very local presence and work - so thank you, Minna Tran, Patrick Thorstensson, Jiar Raza, and Gustav Degler with teams, to name a few, who have been living in a backpack for the past months to make this happen! 🚄
3. I can't resist joining in, as Maria Ziv has shared a sneak peek already. You can now order your MAX Burgers from 5 venues in Stockholm (the first of many) through the MAX application, and get it delivered by Wolt. Thank you, William Nordenström, John Arfwidsson, Magnus Lilja, and many more. What an exciting road you have ahead with our partners, and more to follow around this topic in the future; see Marias' post here: https://lnkd.in/dnwH-a6W. 🍔
The only way is upwards and onwards.
Have a great easter, everyone! 🐣
🚀 Thai delivery firm Line Man Wongnai, worth over $1bn, is preparing for an IPO as soon as 2025 either on the Stock Exchange of Thailand or possibly a dual listing in the US.
📈 The company, which recently acquired a majority stake in payments platform Rabbit Line Pay and restaurant point-of-sale firm FoodStory, aims to become a complete ecosystem for its partners.
🤝 It faces competition from Grab, which has a 51% share of the Thai market compared to Line Man's 24%, but with 40 million active users could extend its reach.

"Getir: The Rise, Challenges, and Strategic Retreat of a Global Delivery Giant"
Getir, founded in 2015 in Istanbul by Nazim Salur, skyrocketed to prominence by promising grocery delivery within 10 minutes. Its valuation soared to $11.8 billion, attracting investments from Sequoia Capital, Tiger Global, and Mubadala Investment Co. However, after expanding into Europe and the US, its last known valuation plummeted to $2.5 billion.
Despite its rapid growth, Getir faced internal conflicts over strategy, notably between its Turkish leadership and European managers. Disagreements arose over the feasibility of maintaining the 10-minute delivery promise and the profitability of selling bananas at heavily discounted prices, with some markets questioning the sustainability of such tactics.
The acquisition of rival Gorillas further strained Getir's finances, leading to a cash burn rate of $50 million per month by summer 2023. This financial strain, coupled with a mass exodus of high-ranking staff, forced Getir to reassess its priorities.
In response, Getir decided to exit international markets and focus on its core market of Turkey. Mubadala, alongside investor G Squared, injected up to $200 million in funding, contingent on meeting specific targets. This strategic retreat signifies a shift towards financial discipline and a return to Getir's roots, emphasizing its resilience and adaptability in a fiercely competitive industry.
🌍 Celebrating 3 Years at Glovo - A Journey of Environmental Impact! 🚀
It's hard to believe it's been three incredible years since I joined Glovo's Social Impact team back in 2021. Reflecting on this journey, I'm immensely proud of what we've achieved together in the realm of sustainability and environmental consciousness.
🌱 2021: Planting the Seeds of Change
In 2021, I embarked on this exciting journey with my fellow rockstars, striving to satiate Glovo's environmental hunger. We pioneered the development of an automated carbon footprint, laying the foundation for a robust reduction strategy aligned with the Paris Agreement 2030, aiming for a 1.5ºC target.
🌎 2022: Setting the Standard
Fast forward to 2022, and we became trailblazers by gaining validation of our reduction targets from the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Glovo emerged as the first delivery company to succeed in this area, and numerous stakeholder meetings were held to infuse sustainability goals into their core objectives.
♻️ 2023: A Year of Transformation
In 2023, our focus intensified on the Packaging Directive, engaging in millions of discussions with various platforms. We rolled out numerous electric vehicle pilots, electrifying the entire Spanish in-house fleet. A significant shift occurred as we transitioned from a carbon-neutral approach to one driven by reduction and natural capital.
🚀 2024: Embracing the Future
As I look forward to what lies ahead in 2024, I'm thrilled about the exciting initiatives on the horizon. Grateful for this amazing team, our visionary leader, and the outstanding work colleagues who share an unwavering environmental mindset.
Here's to many more years of making a positive impact together! 🌿 #Glovo#SustainabilityChampions#EnvironmentalLeadership
