This is an excellent analysis, linking not only the use of digital technologies by China at home and abroad to suppress dissent but also the distinct ethnocentric strategy of CCP rule. There are two additional elements not incorporated: how rapidly evolving data analytical methods (e.g. machine learning and network analysis) are accelerating this dynamic; and how traditional military power and nuclear threats isolate the CCP from accountability. It's critical to appreciate there is a wholly new model of authoritarian dominance rapidly emerging in Beijing: regime opponents and the information environment are manipulated at home and abroad by the center; individual targets for action are precisely identified via digital analysis; and any potential challenges to this central dominance are neutered not only by these approaches but a protective umbrella of extensive conventional forces and nuclear capabilities. The scale of this threat to liberal democracy and the role complacency plays in its development are vastly underappreciated. It sounds too dystopian to be real, but it is precisely what is being developed.
