What do digital product passports have in common with Uber, Airbnb, Wikipedia and Spotify? Adding value to existing products through metadata! Not the same kind of metadata, of course, but similar in principle. The big difference is that those four disruptors did it proactively as business development while most companies are likely to reluctantly comply with the digital product passport regulations out of necessity. ‘Sometimes you’re ahead. Sometimes you’re an ice cream’ 🍦 🚀 Luke Frake made a superhero-landing on the stage of #gms24 with this powerful slide. ‘We’re all running our own race’ 🏃🏼 - Luke’s a runner. His goal is being healthy and feeling good. - Usain Bolt’s also a runner. His goal was being the fastest man alive. Both run, but should Luke then compare his performance with Usain Bolt? Nah. And that’s exactly the point! I see it all the time. 👇 - ‘What’s the benchmark?’ - ‘They are more innovative’ - ‘We should run 20 tests every day’ People and companies focusing too much on the wins and performance of others, not knowing about the nuances to the stories. The defeats and hard-earned success. Just seeing the result and promoted image. ✨ And this is a big thing in experimentation as well. Which is why I found Luke’s talk so important. In experimentation you often hear about how fast-paced and test-driven companies like Booking(dot)com, AirBNB and Spotify are. Running hundreds and thousands of tests. But they did not get to that point immediately. Testing to increase performance has been built into the DNA of these frontiers in experimentation. Sure you can get inspired, and you should. Can you use the progress of others as duel for you to catch up? Even better! But don’t feel a sense of defeat if you don’t get a thousand tests running year 1.
