Climate change is making a huge impact across the globe, resulting in increasing water challenges including drought, flooding. As water stewards, at Nestlé Waters we are always looking to play an active role in addressing these issues. Two years ago, we pledged to help achieve positive water impact everywhere we operate to benefit nature and communities. Take a look at this infographic of one of our projects here in the UK – this is only one of 40 projects underway worldwide to actively lead the regeneration of local water cycles. Our water regeneration projects go beyond the factory gates to tackle shared water challenges. In Derbyshire, where we bottle BUXTON natural mineral water and Nestlé Pure Life spring water, we are working with our partners Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, Wild Trout Trust and Chatsworth Estate to tackle the challenge of manmade structures preventing fish migration. By restoring a section of the River Ecclesbourne back to its original channel, we’re helping species like Atlantic salmon return to the area once again and enrich the river’s biodiversity. We are also set to achieve Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) certification for all Nestlé Waters sites worldwide by the end of 2025, with 22 certified out of 44, so far. This includes our bottling site in Buxton, which was the first manufacturing site in the UK to achieve the certification with platinum status in 2021 – the highest level available. It's World Soil Day and this amazing composting set up at @McIvorfarms reminded me just how valuable waste management and composting are to sustainably and soil health. When you think about it, healthy soils sustain ALL life. According to @nff 94% of Australian farmers are already actively undertaking some form of natural resource management, highlighting the significant environmental stewardship role that farmers play as a part of their day-to-day business. The McIvor farm crew compost green waste from Melbourne and spread it on their paddocks as fertiliser. The results are speaking for themselves. When it comes to the production of Aussie food and fibre, healthy waste and soil management practises like this are: · reducing waste · promoting plant and animal health · resisting erosion · sustaining productivity · and helping to reduce water wastage · all while supplying the nutrients needed to feed us. Without bees and other insects, nearly £700 million of crops wouldn't be pollinated, and one in three mouthfuls of our food wouldn't exist. Sadly, the UK has lost 97% of its wildflower habitats over the past 80 years, forcing bees to travel further for pollen, forage, and shelter. This has led to a decline in a third of wild bee and hoverfly species, with rarer and solitary bees most at risk of extinction. The situation worsens with increased pesticide use and habitat loss. #DYK that the production of our beloved cup of morning coffee can pollute natural water sources if not managed well at its origin?   Since 2014, Catholic Relief Services’ (CRS) Blue Harvest Program has worked with local partners in #Honduras, #ElSalvador, and #Nicaragua to restore water resources and transform coffee livelihoods. The mountainous, coffee-producing areas of Central America provide drinking water for millions of people. Agricultural supply chains use 70% of global freshwater resources, but the UN predicts global demand for fresh water will exceed supply by 40% by 2030. We have water challenges at home and overseas caused by the production of fresh food for UK consumers. Only through collaboration and collective action can we protect critical water resources for food supply, for nature and for local communities. WWF have published Unpacking Collective Action in Water Stewardship, a collective effort across multiple organisations operating in water stewardship, seeking to forge a tangible implementation pathway to tackling shared water challenges through collective action by offering ideas and initiating dialogue. Support wetland conservation organizations: Donate your time or money to organizations working to protect wetlands. Reduce pesticides and chemicals: Opt for eco-friendly alternatives, practice integrated pest management, and promote sustainable farming practices.
