Solar activity has been found to lead to space weather events that can be problematic for our planet. These events can affect the earth's magnetosphere, ionosphere, and upper atmosphere, potentially disrupting radio communications and GPS systems. They can also induce geomagnetic storms responsible for electric currents in power lines that affect power grids and cause transformer failures. Finally, they have also been shown to influence satellite operations by causing increased atmospheric drag on low-Earth orbit satellites. https://lnkd.in/dZsR5yP8

I couldn’t resist seeing the similarities between satellite deployment and butterfly emergence. In both cases the emergence into their final form is one of their most dangerous moments. #Space is a harsh environment Between 1990 and 2008, about 1% of satellites failed in the first 30 days. Of those that failed, about 25% of the failures are due to deployment mechanisms that extend antennas, heat shields, and solar panels. [1] For a butterfly, only about 75% survive as a pupae to become an adult. That is a lot better than the 1% of eggs that survive to adulthood. [2] The survival of butterflies almost makes satellite survival easy. While satellites have engineers working to improve their survivability, at least butterflies have organizations like the North American Butterfly Association to help them. #conservation #space #spacetech #deeptech

ERS-2 (European Remote Sensing satellite) is coming back to Earth around mid-February. Launched in 1995, it reached the end of its mission in 2011 and now, after 13 years of orbital decay, mainly driven by ☀️solar activity, the satellite will now naturally reenter Earth’s atmosphere. The various technologies pioneered on ERS set the stage for successor missions such as the hugely successful Envisat mission, the MetOp weather satellites, today’s family of Earth Explorer scientific research missions and the Copernicus Sentinels as well as many other national satellite missions, paving the way for the routine observations that we take for granted today. https://lnkd.in/dRw5WS_j #ERS2reentry #spacesafety
